Preview Roundups
September 20, 2016
Boston at Baltimore 7:05 PM ET
The American League East race is gaining more definition this week, and the Boston Red Sox are emerging as the clear favorites. The Red Sox will try to add to their division lead and trim their magic number to eight when they visit the Baltimore Orioles for the second of a four-game series on Tuesday.
Chi. White Sox at Philadelphia 7:05 PM ET
The Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies are both out of the postseason race, but the players on the field still have things to prove. The young Phillies will try to impress the front office while Chicago's veterans search for positive momentum heading to the offseason when Philadelphia hosts the White Sox in the opener of a two-game interleague series on Tuesday.
Kansas City at Cleveland 7:10 PM ET
It may be too late for the Kansas City Royals to make a late run toward a postseason spot in the American League, but they can at least make it difficult for the Cleveland Indians to take away their AL Central crown. The Royals will try to keep the Indians from clinching the division for at least a few more days when they visit Cleveland for the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.
NY Yankees at Tampa Bay 7:10 PM ET
The New York Yankees entered their four-game weekend series at Boston sitting four games out of first place in the American League East and two out of the second wild card. Following a sweep by their bitter rival, the Yankees saw each deficit doubled as they prepare to regroup for a visit to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game set.
Atlanta at NY Mets 7:10 PM ET
While Chipper Jones famously cornered the market on tormenting the New York Mets throughout his career, Freddie Freeman has done a pretty good job of it this season. Fresh off his four-hit performance in the opener, Freeman looks to add to his career-best 23-game hitting streak on Tuesday as the visiting Atlanta Braves vie for a series victory at Citi Field.
Washington at Miami 7:10 PM ET
Washington Nationals right-hander Tanner Roark is on the cusp of a career year, but the 29-year-old has endured considered trouble against the Miami Marlins. Roark will look to shake off his troubles versus the Marlins and reel in a career-best 16th win on Tuesday as the National League East rivals play the second contest of their three-game series in Miami.
LA Angels at Texas 8:05 PM ET
The Texas Rangers look to move closer to clinching the American League West crown when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game set. Texas posted a 3-2 walk-off victory in the series opener and reduced its magic number for winning the division title to three.
Cincinnati at Chi. Cubs 8:05 PM ET

Just when the Chicago Cubs’ slumping offense was becoming a concern, the Cincinnati Reds arrived with their record-breaking penchant for allowing home runs. The Cubs hope to continue their slugging ways in the second of a three-game series against the visiting Reds on Tuesday.

Detroit at Minnesota 8:10 PM ET
Rookie left-hander Matt Boyd gets a chance to atone for one of his worst starts of the season when he takes the mound for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at the Minnesota Twins. Boyd was bludgeoned for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings in an 8-1 loss to the Twins in his last start on Sept. 13.
Pittsburgh at Milwaukee 8:10 PM ET
Milwaukee's Miller Park had been a house of horrors for the Pittsburgh Pirates until a visit at the end of last month, when they pulled off a four-game sweep of the Brewers after losing the previous nine meetings there. Pittsburgh hopes that success has a carry-over effect when they open a three-game set against the host Brewers on Tuesday night.
St. Louis at Colorado 8:40 PM ET
The St. Louis Cardinals are banking that Adam Wainwright's success against the Colorado Rockies can bring them one step closer to securing their sixth straight postseason appearance. The veteran right-hander carries a sterling 8-1 career mark with a 1.31 ERA against Colorado into Tuesday's second contest of the three-game series at Coors Field.
Houston at Oakland 10:05 PM ET
The Houston Astros hope to have an easier time Tuesday when they visit the Oakland Athletics for the middle contest of their three-game series. Houston was forced to stage a late rally to register a 4-2 triumph in the opener, scoring one run in the eighth inning to forge a tie and two in the ninth to notch the win and remain three games back in the race for a wild-card spot in the American League with 12 to play.
Toronto at Seattle 10:10 PM ET
J.A. Happ never had come close to winning 20 games during a major-league career that began in 2007. But the left-hander is aiming to reach that milestone when the Toronto Blue Jays visit the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series.
Arizona at San Diego 10:10 PM ET
The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting to stay out of the National League West cellar, and the former emerged victorious in the first of six late-season contests between the teams. San Diego aims to make it two straight wins over the visiting Diamondbacks on Tuesday after posting a 3-2 victory in the opener of the three-game set, which will be followed by a season-ending three-game series at Arizona.
San Francisco at LA Dodgers 10:10 PM ET
Following yet another bullpen collapse, San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy might be forgiven if he fails to call on any relievers for a few days. Bochy and the Giants could use a lengthy outing from starter Johnny Cueto on Tuesday as they battle to keep their playoff hopes alive against the host Los Angeles Dodgers, who lead the National League West by a season-high six games with 12 to play.
