Preview Roundups
September 18, 2014
Texas at Oakland 3:35 PM ET
The Oakland Athletics had their two-year run as American League West champions officially snapped Wednesday and it ended in a manner befitting a team that is in danger of coughing up a playoff spot. On the verge of being swept by the worst team in baseball, the Athletics will look to salvage the finale of a three-game series against the visiting Texas Rangers on Thursday. Oakland gave up six runs in the ninth Wednesday to fall into a tie with Kansas City for the top wild card.
Boston at Pittsburgh 7:05 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Pirates are picking on the lowly Boston Red Sox in order to solidify their postseason standing. The Pirates will try to polish off a three-game sweep and keep the pressure on the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central when they host the Red Sox in the series finale on Thursday. Pittsburgh is 2 1/2 games behind the Cardinals in the Central and holds a 2 1/2-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for the second wild card.
Toronto at NY Yankees 7:05 PM ET
Derek Jeter begins the final homestand of his career when the New York Yankees open a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in a matchup of teams trying to fend off elimination in the American League wild-card chase. Jeter's imminent retirement is not the only certainty entering the four-game set. With the Yankees and Blue Jays both sitting six games behind Kansas City for the second wild card, one team likely will need to sweep the series to keep alive its playoff hopes.
Washington at Miami 7:10 PM ET
Washington Nationals’ manager Matt Williams rested most of his regulars Wednesday, one night after clinching the National League East title. However, Williams said he expects to get many of them back in the lineup when the Nationals visit the Miami Marlins on Thursday to start a four-game series. “It’s important for us to continue to play and to have rhythm and timing and feel for the game,” Williams told reporters. “This time of year, you take days off, and your body shuts down.”
LA Dodgers at Chi. Cubs 8:05 PM ET
The streaky Los Angeles Dodgers hope to hit another hot stretch when they begin a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs in the Windy City on Thursday. After winning three straight to open a four-game lead in the National League West, the Dodgers have been outscored 26-6 while dropping their past two contests. Their division lead is down to two games over San Francisco, which will visit Dodger Stadium for three games starting Monday.
Cleveland at Houston 8:10 PM ET
The Cleveland Indians technically are still alive in the American League wild-card race but are going to need some help over the last 11 games. The Indians will try to take care of their own business by earning a series win when they visit the Houston Astros for the finale of their four-game set on Thursday. Cleveland had its losing streak reach four games with a setback in the series opener but bounced back in the last two behind extraordinary starting pitching.
Milwaukee at St. Louis 8:15 PM ET
The Milwaukee Brewers have been tormented over the years by Adam Wainwright and now must face another nemesis in the finale of their three-game series against the host St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. After falling victim to a complete game by Wainwright for the second time in a span of 11 days, the Brewers must find a way to solve Shelby Miller, who carries a 5-0 record against them into Thursday's start. Milwaukee is 2 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the National League's second wild card.
Arizona at Colorado 8:40 PM ET
Justin Morneau tries to continue his push toward the National League batting title Thursday when the Colorado Rockies begin a four-game series with the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Morneau increased his National League-leading average to .320 - two points ahead of Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison - after going 3-for-4 while matching a season high with six RBIs in Colorado's 16-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.
Philadelphia at San Diego 9:10 PM ET
The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres are not fighting for postseason positioning, but they are locked in a battle. The Phillies will try to earn a split of the four-game series and leave town with the better record between the two clubs when they visit the Padres for the finale of a four-game series Thursday. San Diego (70-81) took the first two games to jump ahead of Philadelphia but things tightened again when the Phillies (70-82) grabbed a 5-2 victory on Wednesday.
Seattle at LA Angels 10:05 PM ET
Felix Hernandez has dominated Los Angeles hitters this season and the Seattle ace looks to outduel Jered Weaver when the Mariners visit the Angels in the finale of a four-game series. Hernandez has limited Los Angeles batters to a .137 average while going 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA in three starts against the Angels, who clinched the American League West crown on Wednesday. Weaver is 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA in three 2014 starts against Seattle.
