Preview Roundups
September 14, 2016
Tampa Bay at Toronto 12:37 PM ET
The Toronto Blue Jays remain firmly in the race to defend their American League East title and still have a hold on a wild-card spot, but their lack of recent success against the last-place Tampa Bay Rays is putting their postseason aspirations in some peril. The Blue Jays attempt to halt their September swoon and win the rubber match of their three-game set versus the visiting Rays on Wednesday when the division rivals finish out their season series.
Chi. Cubs at St. Louis 1:45 PM ET

The St. Louis Cardinals have ensured they won’t watch their arch-rivals celebrate clinching a division title on their own field, but they’re more concerned about keeping pace in the National League wild-card race. The Cardinals look to delay the inevitable for another day and maintain their spot in the tight race for the final playoff spot when they wrap up a three-game series against the visiting Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

San Diego at San Francisco 3:45 PM ET
Winners of their first nine meetings against San Diego this season, the San Francisco Giants are now struggling to record a single victory against the lowly Padres. The Giants look to bounce back from one of their worst losses of the season Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series against visiting San Diego, which scored five runs in the ninth inning of Tuesday’s 6-4 win.
LA Dodgers at NY Yankees 4:05 PM ET
The New York Yankees avoided a three-game slide and kept themselves in the race for an American League wild card spot by knocking off the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The Yankees will try to gain another game in the standings when they host the Dodgers in the finale of the three-game interleague series on Wednesday.
NY Mets at Washington 4:05 PM ET
The New York Mets hold a slim lead for the second wild card but the schedule tilts heavily in their favor entering the finale of a three-game set at the Washington Nationals on Wednesday afternoon. New York has won eight of its last 10 and, after leaving Washington, will play its final 16 games against teams currently sporting sub-.500 records.
Pittsburgh at Philadelphia 7:05 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Pirates appear ready to throw in the towel on the 2016 season and turn their sights toward competing in 2017 and the years to follow. The Philadelphia Phillies, who host the Pirates in the third of a four-game series on Wednesday, have been looking toward the future all season and have a few reasons to be excited about what's to come.
Baltimore at Boston 7:10 PM ET
The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles own two of the most powerful offenses in baseball, and the team with the most home runs has taken each of the first two games in the series. The Red Sox will try to launch the most over the wall in their own park and maintain their lead in the American League East when they host the Orioles in the rubber match on Wednesday.
Minnesota at Detroit 7:10 PM ET
The Detroit Tigers have leveled off since a five-game winning streak in late August, playing .500 ball over their last 16 games to slow their charge for a playoff berth. Anibal Sanchez will look to give the Tigers their first win by a starting pitcher since Aug. 26 when they host the Minnesota Twins in the third of a four-game series.
Miami at Atlanta 7:10 PM ET
The Miami Marlins have all but dropped out of contention for a National League wild card spot and the Atlanta Braves were buried by a horrid April, but two of the top pitchers in baseball will match up when the teams meet on Wednesday. Miami sends ace Jose Fernandez to the mound in Atlanta, five days after a 14-strikeout performance, while Julio Teheran seeks his third victory in the past four starts for the Braves.
Milwaukee at Cincinnati 7:10 PM ET
The Cincinnati Reds haven't had much reason to smile in 2016, but a season high-tying five-game winning streak is as good as any. The cellar-dwelling Reds look to continue their recent dominance of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, when they attempt to complete a three-game sweep and leapfrog their National League Central rivals in the standings.
Oakland at Kansas City 7:15 PM ET
The Kansas City Royals' fading postseason hopes are getting dimmer by the day as the reigning World Series champions are five games out of the American League's second wild-card spot with 18 to play. The Royals have begun their pivotal eight-game homestand with a thud, losing back-to-back meetings with the Oakland Athletics heading into the third contest of their four-game series on Wednesday.
Cleveland at Chi. White Sox 8:10 PM ET
The American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians look to put an end to their current struggles when they visit the division-rival Chicago White Sox on Wednesday for the third contest of their four-game set. Cleveland has fallen to 2-3 on its seven-game road trip and 4-5 in its last nine overall contests by dropping the first two games of the series by a combined 19-5 score.
Texas at Houston 8:10 PM ET
The Texas Rangers have terrorized the Houston Astros this season and look to complete a sweep of the three-game series when they visit their division rivals on Wednesday. Texas scored two runs with two out in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday to avoid a setback and improve to 15-3 versus Houston this year.
Colorado at Arizona 9:40 PM ET
The Arizona Diamondbacks have scored 23 runs in the first two games of the series and look to complete a sweep of the visiting Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Arizona recorded 17 hits while rolling to an 11-4 victory on Tuesday and has racked up 10 or more in 13 consecutive games against Colorado.
Seattle at LA Angels 10:05 PM ET
Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma attempts to set a new career high for victories when the Mariners try to complete a three-game sweep of the host Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Iwakuma is seeking his 16th victory, which would snap a tie with his 2014 output as his best total since leaving Japan for a major league career that began in 2012.
