Chi. Cubs at Cincinnati 12:35 PM ET
The Cincinnati Reds attempt to keep their fading playoff hopes alive when they host the Chicago Cubs in the rubber match of their three-game series Thursday afternoon. After being blanked in the opener, Cincinnati scored seven runs Wednesday en route to their third win in four contests. Skip Schumaker recorded two hits and two RBIs while pinch-hitter Chris Heisey homered as the Reds remained 6 1/2 games behind San Francisco for the second National League wild-card spot.
NY Yankees at Detroit 1:08 PM ET
The presence of three Cy Young Award-winning pitchers is not adding up to a dominant pitching staff, as the Detroit Tigers are finding out the hard way. After watching one of their aces take a beating Wednesday night, the Tigers will hold the latest audition for the No. 5 slot in the rotation when left-hander Kyle Lobstein makes his first major-league start Thursday against the visiting New York Yankees. Detroit sits 2 1/2 games behind first-place Kansas City in the American League Central.
Colorado at San Francisco 3:45 PM ET
Yusmeiro Petit has replaced struggling Tim Lincecum in the starting rotation and will be on the mound Thursday as the San Francisco Giants complete a four-game series against the host Colorado Rockies. Petit landed a start by retiring all 13 batters he faced in relief against Washington last Saturday while Lincecum was demoted after allowing 14 runs (12 earned) in 11 innings over his last three outings. San Francisco has won two of the first three games of the series.
Tampa Bay at Baltimore 7:05 PM ET
Evan Longoria is trying to make the best out of a disappointing season, going 9-for-26 with seven RBIs on the first six games of the road trip for the Tampa Bay Rays. Longoria, who has knocked in 14 runs in his last 13 contests, tries to stay hot as the visiting Rays vie for a split of a four-game series with the first-place Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. The former All-Star recorded three hits in Tampa Bay’s 3-1 victory on Wednesday to raise his batting average to just .255.
Atlanta at NY Mets 7:10 PM ET
Mike Minor struggled through a miserable first four months of the season, but the Atlanta Braves’ left-hander has regained the form that made him one of the top southpaws in the National League after missing a start in early August. Minor leads the Braves into the rubber match of a three-game series at the New York Mets on Thursday after carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning Friday at Cincinnati, his third consecutive strong start.
Cleveland at Chi. White Sox 8:10 PM ET
The Chicago White Sox have little to celebrate in the standings but are still getting a strong individual effort from rookie Jose Abreu. The Rookie of the Year favorite will try to lead the White Sox to a win when they host the Cleveland Indians in the rubber match of a three-game set on Thursday. Abreu picked up RBIs 95 and 96 in Wednesday’s 3-2 triumph, which snapped a season-high seven-game slide for Chicago.
Texas at Houston 8:10 PM ET
Red-hot Chris Carter looks to homer for the fourth consecutive game when the Houston Astros open a four-game series against the visiting Texas Rangers on Thursday. Carter has been on a tear since July 4, belting 20 of his 33 homers to move one behind Baltimore's Nelson Cruz for the major-league lead. The Astros have reversed a trend of dominance by the Rangers in the series, winning seven of the past eight matchups while putting up an average of just under seven runs per game.
Minnesota at Kansas City 8:10 PM ET
The Kansas City Royals have scored all their runs in the series in their final at-bat and look to finish off a sweep of Minnesota when they host the visiting Twins on Thursday. Kansas City tallied six times in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 6-1 win on Wednesday, one night after Alex Gordon hit a game-winning two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth for a 2-1 victory. The Royals hold a 2 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.
Oakland at LA Angels 10:05 PM ET
It was just last weekend that the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels got together to battle for first place in the American League West. After falling just short of getting the top spot back at home last weekend, the Athletics will try again on the road when they visit the Angels for the start of a four-game series on Thursday. Oakland enters the series one game back in the division, just as it was after taking two of three last weekend.
