Preview Roundups
July 28, 2014
San Diego at Atlanta 12:10 PM ET
Ian Kennedy will not be on display Monday for teams interested in dealing for the San Diego Padres right-hander, as a left oblique strain will keep him from making his scheduled start at the Atlanta Braves. Kennedy, whose name has been mentioned in rumors in advance of Thursday’s trade deadline, will be replaced by Jason Lane, a former major-league outfielder who converted to pitching and will make his first big-league start on the mound at age 37.
Arizona at Cincinnati 7:10 PM ET
An offensive tailspin has the Cincinnati Reds sliding down the National League Central standings as they prepare to open a three-game series against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Reds have dropped eight of nine since the All-Star break to fall into fourth place in the division, six games behind pace-setter Milwaukee. Offense has been at the heart of the swoon for Cincinnati, which has scored a total of 16 runs during the nine-game funk.
Toronto at Boston 7:10 PM ET
The Toronto Blue Jays look to take advantage of the sinking Boston Red Sox for the second time in a week as they open a three-game series in Boston on Monday. Toronto took three of four at home against the Red Sox to begin last week before winning two of three at the New York Yankees over the weekend, pulling to within three games of first-place Baltimore in the American League East. Overall, the Blue Jays have won seven of nine following a 2-9 stretch.
Washington at Miami 7:10 PM ET
After the best seven-game road trip in franchise history, the Miami Marlins return home looking to gain more ground in National League East. The Marlins have won seven of their last eight games overall as they host the first-place Washington Nationals on Monday in the opener of a three-game series. Miami went 6-1 on its journey through Atlanta and Houston to pull within seven games of the Nationals (57-45), who have won their last four series and are a season-best 12 games over .500.
Milwaukee at Tampa Bay 7:10 PM ET
Looking to maintain their lead atop the National League Central Division, the Milwaukee Brewers send 11-game winner Kyle Lohse to the mound when they open a three-game interleague series at the resurgent Tampa Bay Rays on Monday in the opener of a three-game set. Lohse has reached double-digit victories for four consecutive seasons, a span in which the veteran right-hander is 52-25. Milwaukee, which holds a two-game lead over St. Louis, is 29-21 away from home.
Philadelphia at NY Mets 7:10 PM ET
Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard capped a tumultuous week that included a three-game benching with a two-run homer to provide the spark in a 4-2 victory over Arizona on Sunday, but he was not in a celebratory mood. "Do you want to trade places?" Howard asked the media after Sunday's game. "Do you want to see what it’s like? No, you don’t." Howard and the Phillies open a seven-game road trip versus division rivals when they visit the New York Mets on Monday night.
Colorado at Chi. Cubs 8:05 PM ET
Even though the Colorado Rockies lead the National League offensively and the Chicago Cubs rank near the bottom, both teams find themselves in a similar place. The Rockies, who look to improve upon their major league-worst 16-33 road record when they begin a four-game set in Chicago on Monday, have lost 12 of their last 13 away from home. That stretch, along with a 3-6 mark since the All-Star break, has Colorado (43-61) only a half-game ahead of Chicago (42-61) for the worst record in the NL.
NY Yankees at Texas 8:05 PM ET
Even Yu Darvish is having trouble winning games as the Texas Rangers attempt to end their long slide when they open a three-game series against the host New York Yankees on Monday. Darvish is just 2-4 over his last seven outings after falling to the Yankees last Wednesday in a rain-shortened affair. New York won three of four in last week’s series against the Rangers, who have dropped 29 of 35 games after losing to Oakland on Sunday.
Oakland at Houston 8:10 PM ET
The Oakland Athletics look to add on to the best record in the majors when they open a three-game road series against the reeling Houston Astros on Monday. Oakland (65-39) owns a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West and has won four of five games since dropping a 12-inning affair against Houston last Tuesday. The Astros have lost five consecutive games since posting the extra-inning win and scored just five runs while losing three straight to the Miami Marlins.
Pittsburgh at San Francisco 10:15 PM ET
The atmosphere at AT&T Park remains electric, but the San Francisco Giants haven’t given their home fans much to cheer about recently. The Giants are 6-19 at home since June 9 heading into Monday’s series opener against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, who have won six of their nine games since the All-Star break. San Francisco is looking to regroup after losing three straight to Los Angeles over the weekend and falling 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the National League West.
