Matt Vierling hit a grand slam, Reese Olson carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the host Detroit Tigers downed the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Akil Baddoo blasted a two-run homer and Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson each drove in a run for the Tigers (67-79), who salvaged the finale of a three-game series.

Olson (4-7) allowed one run and two hits while striking out seven. He also walked four batters as Detroit wrapped up a six-game homestand.

Spencer Steer and TJ Friedl homered for the Reds (76-72).

The Tigers scored a run in the first inning. Cincinnati starter Derek Law (4-6) hit Vierling with a pitch. Vierling stole second, moved to third on Torkelson's flyout and scored on Carpenter's single to right field.

Detroit had a chance to add to its lead in the inning as Jake Rogers reached on an infield hit and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Law then struck out Tyler Nevin.

The Tigers, who left 13 runners on base on Wednesday, also stranded two baserunners in the second.

Olson issued walks to Nick Martini and Friedl in the fourth inning. Jonathan India flied out to left to end that threat.

Detroit made it 3-0 in the bottom of the inning. Nevin led off with a single and Baddoo lined a Ben Lively pitch over the right-field wall for his 10th homer.

Olson, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his previous start, gave up his first hit in the sixth on Jake Fraley's leadoff single to center. Fraley was erased on a double play before Steer blasted his 21st homer over the left field wall.

Detroit's Parker Meadows ended a 0-for-28 drought with a leadoff single in the seventh. He moved up on a throwing error by Lively on a Zach McKinstry comebacker. Torkelson knocked him in with a single to left.

Vierling's ninth homer came off Buck Farmer in the eighth inning and landed over the left-field wall.
