Freddy Peralta pitched effectively into the sixth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers extended their season-high winning streak to seven games, holding on for a 5-4 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

Milwaukee scored five runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead, but Juan Soto pulled the Padres within 5-4 with a two-run homer in the eighth, his 25th, off Joel Payamps.

Peralta (11-8) allowed two runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts to win his fifth consecutive decision. Devin Williams finished with a perfect ninth for his 31st save in 34 opportunities.

Pedro Avila (0-1) allowed five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

Milwaukee, held to one hit through four innings by Avila, erased a 1-0 deficit with five runs in the fifth on five hits, two errors, three walks and a double steal.

Mark Canha beat out an infield single to open the inning and Brice Turang followed with a bunt single. Andruw Monasterio singled home Canha to tie it 1-1. Turang was forced out at third on Tyrone Taylor's fielder's choice. Monasterio and Taylor executed a double steal, with Monasterio continuing home when the throw from catcher Luis Campusano sailed into left field.

Christian Yelich walked and William Contreras followed with a two-run double to left, continuing to third on an error to make it 4-1. Scott Barlow relieved and was greeted by Carlos Santana's RBI double.

Peralta departed after issuing two walks in the sixth. Manny Machado greeted Elvis Peguero with an RBI single to left to make it 5-2. Peguero escaped by enticing Xander Bogaerts into an inning-ending double play.

Bogaerts staked the Padres to a 1-0 lead, opening the second inning with his 15th homer, sending a 3-2 pitch from Peralta 418 feet to left-center.
