DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies used some late-inning heroics Wednesday to beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 and end a five-game losing streak.

After tying the game on left fielder Corey Dickerson's second homer of the game in the eighth, the Rockies won it in the ninth on a single by pinch hitter Daniel Descalso.

The Padres went with a five-man infield against Descalso, but he nullified the strategy by driving Shawn Kelly's second pitch into the gap in left-center.

The hit scored third baseman Nolan Arenado, who opened the ninth with a single against Kelly (0-2). Catcher Michael McKenry's one-out single sent third baseman Nolan Arenado to third. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Descalso.

Kyle Kendrick pitched seven innings, giving the Rockies' overworked bullpen a much-needed chance to exhale and rest. Colorado needed just two relievers, as John Axford, who came off the restricted list earlier in the day, worked the eighth and closer Adam Ottavino (1-0) pitched the ninth. Both relievers retired the side in order.

Dickerson, who homered in the first, tied the game at 4 with a homer against Joaquin Benoit. It was the fourth homer of the season for Dickerson, who was limited to pinch-hit duty Tuesday after departing Monday's game at the end of the third inning when he aggravated the plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

The Padres took a 4-3 lead with a two-run seventh, the second run scoring on pinch hitter Cory Spangenberg's double.

Royals starter James Shields worked six innings and allowed three runs. He gave up five hits in the first two innings and one thereafter. The Padres put him in a position to win with a two-run seventh that put them ahead 4-3.

Catcher Derek Norris' seventh-inning double into the left field corner tied the game at 3. The hit scored first baseman Yonder Alonso, who singled with one out. Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki saved a run when he made a diving stop to his left on third baseman Will Middlebrooks' grounder. Kendrick walked shortstop Alexi Amarista, and Spangenberg followed with an opposite-field double to left-center that gave the Padres the lead.

Center fielder Wil Myers cut the Rockies' lead to 3-2 in the sixth when he hit his second home run of the season.

McKenry finished with three hits, and Arenado had two.
