Nationals 7, Phillies 0: Jordan Zimmermann tossed eight solid innings while Anthony Rendon and Ian Desmond homered in the sixth as Washington handed reeling Philadelphia its seventh shutout loss in 27 games.

Denard Span had three hits and scored three runs for the Nationals, who have won 10 of their last 12 meetings with the Phillies in the nation's capital. Jayson Werth burned his former team with a two-run double and Ryan Zimmerman doubled twice and drove in a run in his return from a fractured right thumb.

Zimmermann (4-2) allowed a pair of two-out hits through the first seven innings before working out of a base-loaded jam in the eighth. The right-hander gave up five hits and struck out four before Tyler Clippard recorded the final three outs as Philadelphia fell for the 10th time in 14 contests and dropped a season-worst eight games under .500.

Washington loaded the bases in the third inning before Werth drilled a 3-0 fastball from rookie David Buchanan (1-2) into the left-field gap. The ball hopped over the fence to plate a pair of runs before Rendon scored on Adam LaRoche's groundout to stake the Nationals to a 3-0 lead.

Zimmerman plated Span in the fifth with his second double of the contest before Washington flexed its muscles in the following inning. Desmond led off the frame with his 11th homer and Rendon belted a two-run shot off Buchanan, who permitted seven runs on 10 hits in six frames while making his third career start.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Playing in his first game since April 12, Zimmerman received a standing ovation from the crowd prior to his second-inning at-bat. He promptly doubled down the left-field line. ... LaRoche failed to record a hit for the first time in seven games since returning from a stint on the disabled list with a right quad strain. ... The Phillies signed RHP Jason Marquis to a minor-league contract.
