Braves 5, Mets 4: Andrelton Simmons finished with two hits and two RBIs as host Atlanta won its sixth in a row.
Simmons capped a three-run fourth with a two-run single and Chris Johnson scored twice as the Braves rallied from an early 2-1 deficit. Atlanta's bullpen pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings as Shae Simmons (1-0) earned his first major-league victory with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings and Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 26th save.
Curtis Granderson homered for the second consecutive night and finished with two hits for New York, which lost its third in a row and has dropped six of seven. Eric Campbell and Juan Lagares added two hits apiece while Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-3) gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings.
Granderson’s two-run homer to right in the third put the Mets ahead 2-1, but after Freddie Freeman’s third-inning double plated Andrelton Simmons to even the score, Atlanta moved ahead 5-2 in the fourth on Mike Minor’s RBI single and Simmons’ two-run single. Daniel Murphy brought New York within 5-4 in fifth with a two-run homer to right.
Minor allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings, but Shae Simmons, Luis Avilan and Jordan Walden (three strikeouts) combined to allow one hit with no walks and five strikeouts to bridge the gap to Kimbrel. Rookie catcher Christian Bethancourt drove in the Braves’ first run with a second-inning single, his first major-league RBI.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta CF B.J. Upton extended his hitting streak to eight games with a fourth-inning single. … The Braves tied a season high with three stolen bases. … Carlos Torres struck out four in three hitless innings of relief for the Mets, throwing 24 of his 32 pitches for strikes.
