White Sox 7, Mariners 5 (16):
Alejandro De Aza and Alex Rios drove in runs in the 16th inning and visiting Chicago was able to hold on to salvage the final game of the series and snap an eight-game skid in a 5-hour, 42-minute marathon.

Rios also broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single that set off a five-run rally in the top of the 14th, but Seattle answered with five in the bottom of the frame against closer Addison Reed as Kyle Seager's grand slam prolonged the game. Rios and Gordon Beckham each had four hits for Chicago.

The teams combined to use 15 pitchers, with Reed (2-0) bouncing back to work two scoreless frames for the win and Hector Noesi (0-1) allowing three runs in three innings for the loss.

The Mariners hit into six double plays, including an unorthodox one to end the fourth inning in which Nick Franklin lined out to right and Rios cut down Seager at the plate, and left 12 men on base. Chicago stranded 13.

Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma allowed only three hits over eight innings, retiring the last 16 batters he faced. White Sox starter Dylan Axelrod lasted only 5 1/3 frames, working around six hits and five walks.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Never before in major-league history have both teams scored five or more runs in a game that was scoreless through nine innings. … Seager went 3-for-5 with a double, a grand slam and two walks to extend his hitting streak to nine games. … The Mariners were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
