Aaron Judge homered and starter Sonny Gray gave New York six strong innings as the Yankees defeated the host Baltimore Orioles 4-1 on Friday night in the opener of their weekend series at Camden Yards.

The first game of the series was postponed by rain Thursday night and will be made up on July 9 as part of a single-admission doubleheader. Also, the weather could be an issue this weekend with storms forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.

Gray (4-4) turned in one of his best starts this season for the Yankees. After struggling in the first two innings, giving up one run on two hits and hitting a batter, he recovered and made it through six innings as New York won for the third straight time.

Gray gave up the one run on four hits with six strikeouts. He got out of trouble in the second, and the Orioles never threatened again.

Aroldis Chapman finished it in the ninth and earned his 13th save by striking out the side.

Orioles starter Andrew Cashner (2-7) was effective. He allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings, giving up single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first when Manny Machado lined a two-out homer to right-center off Gray for his 17th home run of the season.

New York tied it in the third when Gleyber Torres lined an RBI single to center. The Yankees eventually loaded the bases with no outs, but Cashner escaped by allowing just that one run.

The Yankees took the lead in the fifth when Greg Bird lined an RBI triple to center that Adam Jones tried to make a leaping catch on. Jones couldn't do it, and Brett Gardner scored easily from second for a 2-1 lead.

New York made it 3-1 when Austin Romine hit an RBI double to right in the sixth. Judge then crushed a solo homer, his 16th, in the seventh against Tanner Scott.

The Orioles now have lost six straight games as their early-season woes continue.
