PHILADELPHIA -- It is not often that a major league starting pitcher is overshadowed on a night when he records 10 strikeouts.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin nonetheless believed that was the case Tuesday, when his team beat the Miami Marlins 3-1.

"Tonight," he said, "was all about Tommy Joseph and the bullpen."

Joseph, a rookie first baseman playing his third game with the Phillies, went 3-for-4 with his first major league home run while batting out of the cleanup spot for the first time.

Mackanin used five relievers after starter Vince Velasquez needed 103 pitches (68 strikes) to negotiate five scoreless innings. The bullpen recorded the last seven of the Phillies' 17 strikeouts, a total that fell one short of the team record for a nine-inning game.

"To win a game when your starter throws over 100 pitches in five innings is really a bonus," Mackanin said.

Velasquez (5-1) ran his personal winning streak to three. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out 10. It was his first double-figure strikeout game since he fanned 16 San Diego Padres in his second start of the season.

He was, however, "spraying the ball all over the place," in Mackanin's estimation.

"I was beating around the bush, and I could have prevented throwing a lot more pitches, but things happen," Velasquez said, adding that he didn't locate his pitches as well as he would have liked.

"It's just one of those games," he said. "It's a hit-or-miss-type thing."

Elvis Araujo, who followed Velasquez to the mound, fanned one of the three batters he faced, and Andrew Bailey got one out on one pitch. David Hernandez struck out the side in the seventh, and Hector Neris did the same in the eighth.

Jeanmar Gomez allowed a run in the ninth on Derek Dietrich's sacrifice fly but retired Martin Prado with two aboard to end the game and record his 15th save.

Marlins starter Wei-Yin Chen (3-2) went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six. He did not walk a batter.

"I tried to pitch to my strengths," he said, "but tonight I was missing my spots."

Miami's Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Mathis fanned three times apiece, and Marcell Ozuna went hitless in three at-bats, ending a 16-game hitting streak.

The Marlins missed a golden opportunity when Dietrich led off the game with a single and Prado followed with a double, putting runners at second and third. Christian Yelich then grounded a ball to short, but Dietrich did not come home, even though the Phillies kept their infield back.

"You can't let a guy like (Velasquez) get off the hook," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "From there, we couldn't put anything together until the ninth."

Joseph led off the second by lining Chen's 1-2 fastball just over the left field fence and off the foul pole. Besides being his first homer, it was also his first career RBI.

"I just got pretty lucky with that," he said, adding that it was "pretty cool."

Mackanin installed Joseph in the cleanup spot in an attempt to awaken an offense that has struggled all season.

"Just, why not?" the manager said. "He's got a nice-looking swing, good approach. He's aggressive."

Joseph, brought up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley last Friday, was leading the International League in hitting. He said he was surprised to be hitting fourth.

"But this game, a lot of it is trying to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations," he said, "so to hit cleanup for this team, who's playing really well right now, it's pretty awesome."

Philadelphia made it 2-0 in the fifth. Freddy Galvis led off with a bloop double to left. He advanced to third when pinch hitter Emmanuel Burriss struck out for the inning's second out and the Marlins had to make a play to first to complete the strikeout. Peter Bourjos, the No. 9 hitter in the Phillies' order, then lined a single to center, scoring Galvis.

The Phillies' Cesar Hernandez led off the sixth with a single and scored one out later when Ozuna, the Marlins' center fielder, misplayed Joseph's single.

NOTES: Ichiro Suzuki's pinch-hit single in the seventh for Miami was the 2,949th hit of his major league career. He also recorded 1,278 in Japan. ... C Carlos Ruiz worked his 1,000th career game behind the plate, becoming just the fourth player in Phillies history to catch that many games. According to Elias, he is the 48th player in major league history to catch 1,000 games for the same team. ... Ruiz has been filling in for C Cameron Rupp, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said before the game that he expects Rupp to be available for Wednesday's series finale against the Marlins. Mackanin would prefer, however, to rest Rupp that day, giving him more time to heal. Philadelphia is off Thursday.
