SAN FRANCISCO -- The series began with the Rockies scoring 17 runs in a game, and it ended with both of Colorado's last two starting pitchers holding the San Francisco Giants scoreless.

Even slugger Nolan Arenado is impressed with the transformation.

"Whenever you lose a game, I'm always thinking, 'Who's pitching the next game?'" Arenado said after the Rockies beat the Giants 2-0 Sunday.

"Every day, we've got somebody good going. That gives you a good feeling. It gives you a chance to win."

Right-hander Eddie Butler, winless since last May 30, was that guy Sunday in the wake of Colorado's 2-1, 13-inning loss the day before. He combined with four relievers on a six-hit shutout, allowing the Rockies to gain a split of the four-game series with the Giants.

"It's been a while," the 25-year-old said. "I think we're going to have a lot closer games with the arms we have. Once we're able to go longer in games and save the bullpen's arms, they've been very good."

Arenado had a single, a double and a triple for the Rockies, who completed a 6-4 trip through National League West sites.

Colorado had lost two in a row at San Francisco after opening the series with a record-breaking 17-7 win Thursday.

"We'll definitely take this," Arenado said of the winning trip. "Those were some tough places to play. It's nice to go home with that feeling."

Butler (1-1), making just his second start after opening the season at Triple-A, pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second inning, during which he gave up two of the four hits he allowed in six innings.

He walked two and struck out a career-best six, including Giants left fielder Mac Williamson and starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija to end the second inning.

"You get through that, you can relax a little," Butler said of the second inning. "I had better focus after that."

The win improved Butler's career record to just 5-12, with three of those victories coming against the Giants.

Boone Logan, Carlos Estevez, Chad Qualls and closer Jake McGee pitched the final three innings, with McGee recording his eighth save despite Brandon Belt's leadoff single in the ninth.

Qualls got the biggest out of the four, getting Buster Posey to fly out to right field with two on and two outs in the eighth inning with the Rockies clinging to the two-run lead.

"After (Saturday), we were taxed pretty good," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of his bullpen. "Everything (the Colorado relievers) had, they definitely emptied the tank."

Samardzija (4-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Giants. He gave up just two runs on eight hits and one walk in 7 2/3 innings. His three-game winning streak ended despite nine strikeouts.

"A really impressive outing," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Samardzija. "That's a tough loss for him. We didn't do enough offensively to help him out."

Arenado played a role in both Colorado runs.

He tripled off the wall in right-center field with two outs in the first, scoring Trevor Story, who had doubled.

Gerardo Parra's two-out bloop single scored Carlos Gonzalez in the third, after Arenado's single moved the baserunner into scoring position.

Arenado went 3-for-4 in the game, making him 12-for-29 (.414) against the Giants this season.

Hunter Pence had three hits, including a double, and Belt two for the Giants, accounting for five of the club's six hits.

"That's two days in a row no runs after nine innings," Bochy said. "I didn't see that coming."
