CHICAGO - Ten victories might not sound like a lot, but Jose Quintana had a reason to celebrate.

He reached 10 victories for the first time in five major league seasons on Sunday afternoon as he led the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

In each of his previous three seasons, Quintana won nine times.

"He was just yelling and screaming like a little kid in there," White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier said. "He deserved it. Sometimes you gotta get like that in this game and bring it back to how you used to play when you were little."

Quintana (10-9) struck out six, walked one and gave up two runs and eight hits in seven innings.

"All the guys, teammates, celebrated that with me," said Quintana, who was an All-Star for the first time this season. "It was fun. Every time I try to get better and better and finally I get my 10th win."

Lack of run support has often kept the left-hander from picking up more wins for the White Sox (59-64), who took two of three against the A's and have won five of their last nine games overall.

"This is really special for me," Quintana said. "When the year started, that's my first goal. I want to get more than 10 wins to help my team, but I'm really happy. I'll try to get more wins."

The White Sox were averaging 3.31 runs per Quintana start, the second-lowest run support in the American League. They almost surpassed that in the first inning, scoring three runs. Justin Morneau hit an RBI double and Frazier's single scored two. Frazier had three hits and drove in two runs.

Quintana's teammates also supported him with good defense, including a running catch and a diving catch by centerfielder J.B. Shuck.

"They did a lot of great work, especially in the outfield, taking away extra-base hits, multiple ones over the course of the last couple games," A's manager Bob Melvin said.

The Athletics (53-71) have lost seven of eight and 16 of 22. They made it a one-run game on Khris Davis' 32nd home run, a two-run shot in the fourth.

Chicago's Jose Abreu answered with his second home run in two games. He hit a solo shot for his 16th of the season in the bottom of the fourth.

Abreu said before the game that he is playing better because his 5-year-old son has been visiting him from Cuba.

"His hands have been working pretty good for a while," manager Robin Ventura said. "Having his son here, just the way he personally feels about it, we all know he has a little bit more pep in his step as he's walking around. He's swinging the bat better. I don't know if that is the reason, but I know he's feeling better as a person just because of it."

A's starter Zach Neal (2-3) allowed four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He started in place of Jesse Hahn, who experienced discomfort in a bullpen session and will pitch at least one more rehab outing before coming off the disabled list. Neal, a rookie, is 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA in relief appearances but was 1-2 with a 7.98 ERA in three previous starts.

"That was a tough (first) inning for sure," Neal said. "After that, it seemed to go pretty well. But the first one hurt for sure."

Chad Pinder of the A's recorded his first major league hit with a single in the seventh. He went 0-for-4 in his major league debut Saturday.

David Robertson earned his 32nd save, the third most in the American League.

"Bad trip. 1-5 is no good," Melvin said about his team's road-trip record.

NOTES: White Sox 2B Brett Lawrie (hamstring) returned from his rehab assignment with Double-A Birmingham and is expected to be evaluated Monday. He left Saturday's game with Birmingham after just four innings. ... Oakland DH Billy Butler (stomach illness) was out of the lineup for the second straight game. ... LHP Sean Doolittle's (left shoulder) rehab assignment is expected to last longer and he likely won't rejoin the A's this week. ... White Sox INF Tyler Saladino (back) remained out of the lineup for the third straight game. He should be available Tuesday after Monday's off day, manager Robin Ventura said.
