SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong decided it was time to "hit the reset button and start over" Tuesday night at AT&T Park against San Diego in his first start of May.

Vogelsong went 0-2 with a 9.31 ERA in April. He capped the month with a nightmare start at Dodger Stadium, giving up three home runs in the first inning and four overall in just three innings of work against the Dodgers.

So Vogelsong made some mechanical adjustments, shaved his not-so-lucky beard and threw seven shutout innings in a 6-0 victory against the Padres.

"I think after you give up four home runs in a game it's probably time to go," a relieved Vogelsong said of his decision to shave.

Vogelsong allowed just three hits -- all singles -- and recorded his first victory of the season in his fourth start.

"Good bounce-back job by him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "This game's all about being resilient, and he's had some early ups and downs but had a good look, good focus out there, pounded the strike zone very well tonight.

"That's vintage Vogey. We've seen him do that so many times here. Good for him. I was happy for him to come back after a rough start and throw like that."

Giants second baseman Joe Panik hit a solo home run in the fifth inning while shortstop Brandon Crawford went 3-for-3 with a double, scored twice and drove in a run.

The Giants (14-13) won their eighth straight home game and their fifth straight game overall. They moved above .500 for the first time since April 10, when they were 3-2.

The Giants recorded their third straight shutout, their longest streak since June 25-28, 2012, when they had four straight.

After Vogelsong's disaster against the Dodgers, Giants starter Chris Heston, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner threw gems.

"You don't want to be the guy that's not holding your own," Vogelsong said. "I definitely didn't want to be the guy to give up the first run in a couple games. There was definitely motivation behind that."

Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner (1-5) gave up six runs (four earned) over seven innings and took the loss. He struck out three and walked three.

"I wasn't very good tonight," Cashner said. "I left a lot balls over the middle of the plate. Didn't give the offense a chance to get working tonight. Didn't get ahead of hitters. Hung a lot of sliders. It was a huge disappoint. I expect to be way better than that."

The Padres extended their scoreless streak to 20 innings, 18 of those against the Giants.

"He mixed pitches," Padres manager Bud Black said of Vogelsong. "The curveball came into play. Had the fastball at the top of the zone that ran in on our hands, a little cutter away from the righties, into lefties. Changed speeds. Pretty much textbook pitching, aided by some good defense, some hard hit balls that went their way."

The Giants took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. First baseman Brandon Belt launched a leadoff double to left-center, and Crawford walked. Right fielder Justin Maxwell brought Belt home with a one-out single to right as Crawford moved to third.

Crawford scored when third baseman Matt Duffy hit a ground ball to shortstop Alexi Amarista. Amarista got the force at second, but Duffy beat second baseman Cory Spangenberg's throw to first.

The Giants scored three more runs in the third, two of them unearned, and extended their lead to 5-0.

Catcher Buster Posey singled with two outs and moved to second when Belt walked. Crawford lined an RBI single to left, making it 3-0. Posey advanced to third and Crawford to second when left fielder Justin Upton airmailed his throw home for an error.

Posey and Crawford scored on an error by first baseman Yangervis Solarte, who let center fielder Gregor Blanco's hard ground ball get past him.

Panik led off the fifth with his second home run of the season and second in three games. He sent Cashner's 1-1 pitch into the right-field seats, increasing the Giants' lead to 6-0.

That was more than enough support for Vogelsong, who never lost faith that he could bounce back.

"I'm a believer," Vogelsong said. "I believe you can do anything if you believe in yourself and believe you're here for a reason."

NOTES: Giants CF Angel Pagan (lacerated left middle finger) was a late scratch from the lineup. Pagan was spiked while stealing second base Monday. Justin Maxwell replaced Pagan in the lineup and started in right field with Gregor Blanco moving to center. ... Giants 3B Casey McGehee, who's batting .181, was out of the starting lineup and might get another day off Wednesday, manager Bruce Bochy said. "He even admitted he probably needed to take a step back," Bochy said. "The guy cares. He probably put a little added pressure on himself because he does care so much." ... Padres RHP Brandon Morrow was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with right shoulder inflammation. "I think it's common sense that his shoulder is telling him something, and we're acting on it right away," Padres manager Bud Black said. RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, a long reliever, will take Morrow's spot in the rotation and start Thursday at Arizona. ... Padres LHP Frank Garces was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and replaced Morrow on the 25-man roster. ... Padres 1B Yonder Alonso (sore shoulder) was out of the lineup for the second straight game after being hit with a pitch Sunday.
