MILWAUKEE -- Ryan Braun went deep in the sixth inning on Wednesday afternoon and moved into first place on the franchise's career home run list.

But more important than history, Braun's home run provided much-needed breathing room for the Brewers, who held on and avoided a series sweep with an 8-7 victory over the Miami Marlins at Miller Park.

"It was nice and convenient that the tying home run came in a game that we won and the one to go ahead comes in a game that we win," said Braun, who has hit 252 home runs since joining the Brewers in May 2007.

He passed Hall of Famer Robin Yount, who hit 251 during his 20-year Milwaukee career and is a fixture during spring training while making frequent visits during the regular season.

"Robin is the best player in franchise history," Braun said. "He played here for 20 years, he accomplished so many incredible things, so any time you're mentioned alongside his name, it's pretty special."

Braun's home run capped an impressive day for the Milwaukee offense, which produced eight hits and featured a two-homer effort from left fielder Khris Davis.

The Brewers' production helped negate a rocky start by right-hander Wily Peralta, who struggled early in his five-inning start and gave up six runs -- five earned -- and eight hits and three walks while striking out two.

"He got off to a rough start," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "But we needed innings today after the last two days. The rest of the game I thought he competed really well and he got us through five innings. Kept us in the game, and he got the win today. We got knocked on our heels today, but we responded."

Three of Miami's runs came in the first inning, two on a homer by first baseman Justin Bour. The Marlins (49-71) added runs in the second and third, but the Brewers (52-70) answered in the bottom of each inning with home runs by Davis.

His two-run shot in the second made it 4-2, and he tied the score at 5 in the third with a three-run blast off right-hander Tom Koehler (8-11), who worked 4 1/3 innings and surrendered seven runs, nine hits and four walks while striking out four. Koehler lost his fifth consecutive decision.

"They hit good pitches and bad pitches," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "We just couldn't keep the ball in the ballpark. Stake him (Koehler) to a 4-0 lead and felt good about it. He got some balls up obviously that they certainly hit well. They made him pay for his mistakes."

The Marlins went back ahead in the fifth when third baseman Martin Prado scored on a fielder's choice by Bour, but Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the inning and Braun gave Milwaukee a two-run lead in the sixth with his 24th home run of the season.

"Very pleased with the offense," Jennings said. "The quality of the at-bats speak for themselves. Usually, you score seven runs, you feel pretty good about coming out on top. We just couldn't keep the ball in the ballpark today."

Brewers right-hander Francisco Rodriguez gave up a solo home run to center fielder Marcell Ozuna with two outs in the ninth but struck out pinch-hitter Casey McGehee to post his 30th save in as many chances this season.

Rodriguez has converted 35 consecutive save opportunities dating to last season and is the active leader with 377 career saves.

NOTES: Milwaukee placed RHP Tyler Cravy on the 15-day disabled list with an impingement in his right elbow. With Cravy out, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he would move to a four-man rotation to take advantage of a number of off-days on the Brewers’ upcoming schedule. ... Marlins OF Ichiro Suzuki got a day off Wednesday. He had started seven of Miami's last eight games. ... Since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on June 11, Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett is batting .293 (55-for-188), the fourth-best mark among NL second basemen during that stretch. He was batting .154 when he was sent down on May 5. ... Marlins SS Adeiny Hechavarria did not play. He has a 12-game hitting streak in which he is batting .362 (17-for-47) with two triples and five RBIs.
