SAN DIEGO -- El Nino is a term used by meteorologists to describe a warming trend along the equatorial Pacific Ocean that leads to heavier winter rains in southern California -- in other words, good times.

Well, "El Nino" is a name the Padres have taken to calling third baseman Yangervis Solarte, who recently has been delivering good times for San Diego.

On Wednesday afternoon, Solarte followed a game-tying homer with a decisive RBI double as the Padres defeated the Braves 3-2 at Petco Park to complete a three-game sweep of Atlanta.

It was the Padres' first series sweep since the first three days of May and only their third of the season.

In the last two games of the sweep, Solarte went 4-for-7 with two homers and five RBIs. Forn the season, he is hitting .268 with nine homers and 47 RBIs.

Since he took over as the Padres' every-day third baseman on July 22 when Will Middlebrooks was optioned to Triple-A El Paso, Solarte has hit .337 (31-for-92) in his last 24 games with six doubles, two triples, four homers and 14 RBIs.

"Solarte is coming into his own," Padres manager Pat Murphy said. "He's starting to believe he can play. He has great energy. He even gives the perception he can run, although he can't."

Solarte said, "It definitely helps to be playing consistently and playing in one spot (third base) has helped. I try to be positive and play hard. Energy is part of who I am."

As for El Nino, "I don't know where that came from," Solarte said. "I was Slowarte. I guess this is better."

Rookie catcher Austin Hedges and Solarte lined run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the seventh to give the Padres to a 3-1 lead. The Braves got a run back in the eighth on a single by former Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin and a RBI double by Nick Markakis.

Center fielder Melvin Upton Jr. led off the seventh with a single to center against Braves left-handed reliever Matt Marksberry (0-2), stole second and scored on a double by Hedges down the line in left. Hedges came home on Solarte's double to left center.

An inning earlier, Solarte tied the score with a leadoff homer against Braves right-handed starter Julio Teheran, who was unhappy coming out of the gameafter allowing one run on four hits in six innings.

"I wanted to stay in the game," Teheran said. "Whenever you are pitching well, you want to stay in the game. That's a decision I can't control."

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "I really thought a lot about leaving Teheran in ... a lot," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

The Padres again jumped on the Braves' bullpen. In 6 2/3 innings spanning three games, the Padres produced 10 runs, 13 hits and five walks in 6 2/3 innings against the Atlanta bullpen.

Right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley (2-2) picked up the win for the Padres and former Braves right-handed closer Craig Kimbrel posted his 35th save of the season.

Padres right-handed starter Tyson Ross has battled his control all season and the Braves took advantage of a brief bout of wildness to take a 1-0 lead in the third.

After Hedges picked Braves left fielder Michael Bourn off first for the second out in the inning, Ross issued back-to-back walks to Maybin and first baseman Freddie Freeman. Markakis followed with a sharp ground single to right, enabling Maybin to score easily from second.

With the help of two double-play grounders to shortstop Alexi Amarista, Ross held the Braves to one run with six hits, three walks and five strikeouts in six innings. The walks pushed his National League-leading total to 70 this season in 151 2/3 innings.

Meanwhile, Teheran had retired eight straight Padres when Solarte led off the bottom of the sixth with his ninth homer of the year -- and his second in as many games -- to tie the score at 1.

Teheran, who entered the game with a 2-5 road record with a 6.75 ERA, allowed one run, four hits and a walk and a hit a batter with seven strikeouts when he also left after six innings.

Teheran worked out of a first-inning jam when he loaded the bases with one out on a hit batter, a single by right fielder Matt Kemp (extending his hitting streak to 12 straight games) and a walk. But Teheran retired second baseman Jedd Gyorko on a short fly to right and Upton Jr. on a grounder to short.

In the next four innings, the Padres' lone baserunner -- Solarte on a single leading off the third -- was erased on a double-play grounder.
