NEW YORK -- Third baseman Chase Headley singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and the New York Yankees rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night at frigid Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees scored three times in the inning and took their first lead of the season when Headley hit a ground ball against left-hander Brett Cecil that deflected off the mound and under the glove of shortstop Jose Reyes into left field.

Before Headley's hit on a 3-2 pitch, the Yankees forged a 3-3 tie when they capitalized on Cecil's wildness after loading the bases against Aaron Loup (0-1)

Pinch hitter Chris Young began the inning with a single that dropped into short right field. He later scored on a wild pitch. One pitch after intentionally walking first baseman Mark Teixeira, Cecil plunked catcher Brian McCann.

Loup and Cecil's poor outings spoiled a solid outing by knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Dickey allowed a run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Dellin Betances (1-0) picked up the win despite throwing 32 pitches and giving up an unearned run in the eighth. Andrew Miller pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.

Before the bullpen meltdown in the eighth, Toronto scored on an RBI single by rookie second baseman Devon Travis in the third and a sacrifice fly by catcher Russell Martin in the fifth. The Yankees scored their first run on a sacrifice fly by Beltran in the sixth.

New York right-hander Michael Pineda pitched in cold weather for the first time since last April in Boston, when he was ejected for having pine tar on his neck. This time, there was not any pine-tar usage and Pineda allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

Toronto took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI infield single by Travis, who reached when shortstop Didi Gregorius made a high throw to first base. The hit drove in left fielder Kevin Pillar, who reached on an infield single and took third on first baseman Justin Smoak's double. The Blue Jays stranded runners at the corners when Martin and right fielder Jose Bautista struck out on off-speed pitches from Pineda.

In the fifth, Martin lifted a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. That run came after a ground ball by Jose Reyes went off Teixeira's glove to second baseman Stephen Drew, who committed a throwing error trying to get Travis at third base.

At the start of the game, Dickey issued a leadoff walk to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury but promptly picked him off first base.

New York had a runner on third with two outs in the second after Teixeira doubled and advanced on a groundout. The threat ended when designated hitter Alex Rodriguez struck out on a full-count pitch.

NOTES: Toronto OF Michael Saunders will play in the field during a rehab game for Class A Dunedin on Thursday in Clearwater, Fla. The Yankees announced that C Austin Romine cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after being designated for assignment last week. ... New York RHP Michael Pineda made his first April start since last year's pine-tar accident. Asked about reminding him, manager Joe Girardi said: "I think he understands, I hope." ... The Blue Jays announced that former sluggers Carlos Delgado and George Bell will present OF Jose Bautista with his Silver Slugger at Monday's home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.
