SEATTLE -- Very few Los Angeles Angels enjoy any kind of success against Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, but those who do were at it again Tuesday night.

David Murphy and Mike Trout, both of whom hit Hernandez well, each homered to provide all the offense the Angels needed in a 4-3 win over the Mariners.

Los Angeles starting pitcher Nick Tropeano outpitched Hernandez, and the Angels held on to win despite being without their closer. Joe Smith came on to pitch a scoreless ninth, earning his third save, while Huston Street battled nausea and dehydration that have bothered him since the weekend.

The Angels (73-71) snapped a two-game losing streak and are now four games back of new American League West leader Texas.

"We know we need to win every single day," Murphy said after hitting a three-run shot in the third inning that gave the Angels the lead for good. "We came in with that mindset (Tuesday), and we're going to come in with that mindset (Wednesday)."

Hernandez (17-9) had a three-start winning streak snapped, allowing four runs on five hits over seven innings. The long ball was his nemesis, as Murphy gave the Angels a 3-1 lead with a three-run shot in the third inning and Trout hit his 36th home run of the season to put Los Angeles ahead 4-2 in the sixth.

"It's a funny game," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said, "because I thought Felix had great stuff. He made two bad pitches, and those cost us the ballgame."

Murphy, whose 19 career RBIs off Hernandez are the most for any hitter, said he took advantage of an inside changeup.

"We scored four runs on two pitches," he said. "If you're going to beat a guy like that, that's how it's going to happen. He's not going to make very many mistakes, and when he does, you really need to make him pay."

Trout's home run was his fourth career shot off Hernandez, against whom he owns a .349 career batting average.

"Felix is one of the top pitchers of his generation," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Mike definitely has some numbers (against Hernandez) that jump out, but Mike's pretty good, too."

Designated hitter Nelson Cruz and left fielder Franklin Gutierrez each homered for Seattle (70-76). Cruz's home run was his 42nd of the season, the most hit by a Mariners player since Ken Griffey Jr. had an AL-best 48 in 1999.

Gutierrez's 13th homer of the season, and his 10th since Aug. 5, was a solo shot off Fernando Salas that cut the Angels' lead to 4-3 in the seventh. However, relievers Trevor Gott and Smith made sure the Mariners didn't score again.

Smith struck out first baseman Mark Trumbo and Gutierrez to open the ninth before giving up a two-out single to second baseman Brad Miller. Smith then struck out pinch hitter Shawn O'Malley to end the game.

Tropeano (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits over five innings to earn his third major league victory. Two of the victories came at Safeco Field, where he won his debut as a member of the Houston Astros last September.

"My goal every time out is to give my team an opportunity to win," Tropeano said, "and I think I did that (Tuesday)."

McClendon felt the game was a lost opportunity for the Mariners.

"I thought (Tropeano) was a good matchup for us," McClendon said. "I thought we could score some runs on him, but it didn't happen."

Angels catcher Carlos Perez had three hits.

Gutierrez drove in two of the Mariners' three runs.

NOTES: The Angels shuffled their lineup, with LF David Murphy in the leadoff spot for the first time this season. ... RHP Taijuan Walker will skip his next scheduled start, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon announced. The 23-year-old right-hander has already thrown 169 2/3 innings this season, the highest total of his career at any level. McClendon said the team has not decided whether Walker will make another start this season. ... Mariners OF Shawn O'Malley, who took a throw off the side of his head in Monday's game, was not in the lineup Tuesday. He made the last out as a pinch hitter. ... MLB.com reported Tuesday that the Angels are targeting Yankees assistant general manager Billy Eppler, Indians vice president of player personnel Ross Atkins and Red Sox assistant general manager Mike Hazen for their open GM position.
