DETROIT -- The Toronto Blue Jays' vaunted offense got rolling a little bit earlier than it had in recent games. That made it easy to snap their three-game winning streak.

Jose Bautista and Justin Smoak homered during a six-run fifth against Justin Verlander and the Blue Jays cruised to a 10-5 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Toronto scored a first-inning run and extended its lead to 7-0 with the outburst. It had been outscored 20-5 over the first five innings during its three-game slide.

"That's what it's about," said Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, who had two hits and drove in two runs. "It's just kind of building that momentum throughout the game. When you score a run, the momentum starts. Then you go out there on defense and put up a zero, it carries over to the next inning. Then you just keep building and building. With this team we're very capable, when that momentum gets going, to score a lot of runs."

It was the 17th home run for Bautista, the Jays' right fielder, and the eighth for first baseman Smoak. Second baseman Devon Travis drove in three runs for the Blue Jays (43-41), who have scored a major-league-leading 460 runs.

Marco Estrada (6-4) lasted the minimum five innings to get the victory. He allowed two runs on five hits while throwing 101 pitches. Considering that the Blue Jays' starters had posted a 9.15 ERA over the previous five games, Estrada's outing was a major step forward.

"We really needed it," Estrada said. "We were getting a little frustrated with ourselves."

Roberto Osuna got the last four outs to record his third save.

Osuna gave the team a scare when he felt some muscle tightness in his lower back during the final inning. After assuring manager John Gibbons he was OK, Osuna retired Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez for the final out.

"I didn't feel like I've got to get out of the game," Osuna said. "I could pitch and that's what I did. I don't feel it too much. I'm sure it will be sore but I'll be ready for tomorrow."

Right fielder J.D. Martinez ripped his 10th homer in 12 games and second baseman Ian Kinsler contributed a two-run triple for Detroit (41-40). Tigers center fielder Anthony Gose added a solo homer. Losing pitcher Verlander (0-2) allowed seven runs on seven hits in five innings.

Verlander's implosion came after he retired 12 of 13 batters. He is still seeking his first win after four starts.

"He looked real good," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "I thought he was going to go deep in the game and keep putting zeroes up. He kind of hit a roadblock and quite frankly, I think it was location."

The Tigers, a perennial contender, hit the midway point just a game above .500 and will be without its franchise player, Miguel Cabrera, for approximately six weeks. Cabrera suffered a Grade 3 left calf strain on Friday.

"We've had spells where we've had trouble scoring runs," Ausmus said. "More recently, we've scuffled with our pitching. The last couple of weeks, the pitching hasn't been as sharp. But it's a 162-game season and it's 81 games. We've got 81 to go and that's a long time."

The Blue Jays took a lead two batters into the game. Shortstop Jose Reyes blooped a double to left and scored on Donaldson's single up the middle.

Toronto then broke the game open in the fifth. After the first two batters reached, Travis doubled in a run and Reyes followed with an RBI groundout.

Following Donaldson's RBI single through the drawn-in infield, Bautista lined Verlander's 2-1 pitch over the left-field wall. Smoak's two-out blast to right made it 7-0.

NOTES: Tigers C Alex Avila made his second consecutive start at first base in place of injured Miguel Cabrera. Avila tumbled into the stands while making a catch on Saturday and said he felt sore standing up for nine innings instead of squatting. "I think he's sore from hitting the railing," manager Brad Ausmus said with a grin. ... Detroit recalled LHP Ian Krol from Triple-A Toledo after the game and optioned RHP Drew VerHagen to the Mud Hens. The Tigers had only one left-hander, Blaine Hardy, in the bullpen once Tom Gorzelanny was designated for assignment on Friday. ... Blue Jays RHP R.A. Dickey, who took the loss on Saturday, is 0-6 with a 6.04 ERA on the road this season. Dickey is scheduled to pitch at Chicago against the White Sox on Thursday afternoon. ... Toronto LHP Mark Buerhle, who has won his last four decisions, opposes White Sox ace Chris Sale in the opener of a four-game series on Monday night.
