CHICAGO -- Mikie Mahtook came through with a two-out single in the ninth inning to score Logan Forsythe with the go-ahead run in the Tampa Bay Rays' 5-4 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Right-hander Jake McGee earned the win in relief, and right-hander Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth for his 27th save.

Chicago made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth after a lead-off single by shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who then stole second with no outs. First baseman Adam LaRoche hit a single to center, but center fielder Kevin Kiermaier threw Ramirez out at the plate for the first out.

Forsythe, the Rays' second baseman, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, third baseman Evan Longoria went 3-for-5 with an RBI, left fielder Grady Sizemore went 2-for-2 with a home run, and Mahtook, a right fielder, went 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI to lead the Rays (53-54).

Chicago (50-54) got its runs on a pair of two-run homers by second baseman Carlos Sanchez (1-for-4) and designated hitter Jose Abreu, who went 2-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Right-hander David Robertson, who allowed Mahtook's single, took the loss. Left-hander Jose Quintana started for the White Sox and took a no-decision after allowing two runs in six innings.

Trailing 2-0 to start the sixth, with only one hit against Tampa Bay right-hander Nathan Karns, the White Sox tied it 2-2 on a single by third baseman Tyler Saladino and Abreu's two-run homer, which went over the wall just past Kiermaier's glove.

Kiermaier appeared to make contact with the outstretched glove of a fan, but not until after the ball disappeared behind the wall. The home run was upheld after a 38-second review.

Karns was taken out afterward, having thrown 5 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on three hits.

A fan did interfere with a ball in play in the seventh, however, when Longoria put the Rays back in front 3-2 with a ground-rule double. Sanchez's homer in the bottom of the seventh then gave Chicago its first lead, 4-3, on his third homer of the season.

Sizemore tied it 4-4 with his homer with two outs in the eighth off left-hander Zach Duke, setting the stage for the ninth-inning dramatics.

The Rays took an early 1-0 lead by scoring a first-inning run off Quintana on three hits, including a run-scoring double by Forsythe. They added another run in the fifth on three hits and a sacrifice fly designated hitter Joey Butler to make it 2-0.

The run gave Karns a little breathing room. He didn't allow a hit until Abreu led off the fourth with a double, and he struck out six through his first four innings of work.

NOTES: The White Sox recalled OF Trayce Thompson, 24, from Triple-A Charlotte. Thompson hit .260 with 23 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 39 RBIs, 53 runs and 11 stolen bases for Charlotte. He will be used as a utility outfielder while OF J.B. Shuck is on the 15-day disabled list. Thompson is the younger brother of Klay Thompson, who plays for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, and Mychel Thompson, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011-12 season. Thompson's father, Mychal, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. ... White Sox CF Adam Eaton and 1B/DH Jose Abreu were named the American League's Co-Offensive Players of the Week for their performance from July 27 to Aug. 2. ... The Rays recalled 3B/1B Richie Shaffer, 24, from Triple-A Durham and he made his major-league debut, starting at first base.
