CHICAGO - A little more than a week ago, the Chicago White Sox had a roster decision to make.

They could send Trayce Thompson back to the minor leagues so he could play every day or keep him in the major leagues, even though he would play part-time and doing so would mean releasing veteran Emilio Bonifacio.

The White Sox chose to keep Thompson, and they are delighted they did.

Thompson had three hits and drove in three runs - including the go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning - to lead the White Sox to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.

Thompson, the brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, is 12-for-23 since being promoted to the major leagues earlier this month.

"I don't know if it's amazing, but he's on a nice run," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said of Thompson. "We are getting him at-bats against lefties right now and he's taking advantage of it. He's had great at-bats the whole time he's been in here. We talked about improvements you've seen with guys from spring training and then you get to see them again.

"His has been a big jump. He belongs here and he knows that. The way he's taking his at-bats, he's going up there being aggressive and confidence is high with him right now."

Thompson, starting in right field, had two hits (a triple and a single) in his first three at-bats against Boston starter Wade Miley (10-10), but interim Red Sox manager Torey Lovullo opted to keep the left-hander in the game when Thompson batted in the seventh with two out and two on and Boston clinging to a 4-3 lead.

Miley tried to get a fastball inside on Thompson's hands and the rookie pulled it into the left field corner, scoring left-fielder Melky Cabrera and designated hitter Avisail Garcia. Earlier in the frame, Cabrera singled to drive in third baseman Gordon Beckham.

"I thought Wade did a good job all night long and in my eyes deserved an opportunity to work through that situation," Lovullo said. "He didn't have any long, extended innings and it was his game to win or lose. He just made a mistake pitch over the plate and it cost a couple of runs."

Boston snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Center fielder Mookie Betts led off with an infield single and scored from first on a double down the right-field line by third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts singled to put runners on the corners and one out later, first baseman Travis Shaw drove in Sandoval with a fielder's choice grounder to second.

Jake Petricka (4-3) pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win and David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

But there's little doubt Thompson, 24, was the biggest factor in the game. While he probably didn't expect to be batting higher than .500, Thompson said isn't surprised he's doing well.

"I'm confident in myself and my abilities," he said. "You have to be to have success here. I'm not playing every day, so I try to keep the same routine every day. I think that's helped me a lot. I think the biggest thing is confidence, though. The first day I was here (first-base coach Daryl Boston) told me it's all about confidence and knowing you can play here. I took that to heart and it's really helped me a lot."

NOTES: With a day off on Thursday before opening a three-game series in New York against the Mets, the Red Sox announced Tuesday that they'll skip LHP Eduardo Rodriguez to keep the 22-year-old's innings down. "We're trying to manage his time and his workload," Boston interim manager Torey Lovullo said. "This is a way to give him a couple of extra days." ... White Sox 1B Jose Abreu entered Tuesday batting .370 (17-for-46) with six doubles, four homers and 10 RBIs in 12 games against Boston ... Chicago CF Adam Eaton was batting .324 (35-for-108) with 21 runs in his last 28 games before Tuesday. ... Boston RHP Rick Porcello (5-11, 5.81 ERA) will be re-instated from the disabled list to start the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday. LHP Chris Sale (12-7, 3.34) starts for the White Sox. Sale is 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA and 36 strikeouts in his last three starts.
