Royals 8, Orioles 6 (10):
Alex Gordon slugged a go-ahead solo home run in the 10th and Mike Moustakas added a two-run blast later in the frame as Kansas City continued its extra-inning magic and edged host Baltimore in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

Gordon, who delivered a three-run double earlier in the contest, led off the 10th by driving a 1-1 fastball from Darren O’Day (0-1) into the seats in right field before Moustakas took Brian Matusz deep three batters later. Alcides Escobar also homered, Billy Butler notched two hits and an RBI and Lorenzo Cain added a pair of hits scored twice for the Royals, who are 5-0 with four extra-inning wins in the postseason.

Wade Davis (1-0) struck out four in two perfect innings to earn the win in relief and Greg Holland allowed pinch-hitter Delmon Young’s RBI single before getting out of the jam to notch the save. Ryan Flaherty went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Nelson Cruz added a run-scoring double and Nick Markakis collected three hits to help overcome a four-run deficit for the Orioles, whose bullpen wiggled out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the ninth before caving in the 10th.

Escobar lined a 2-0 fastball into the stands in left to put Kansas City ahead in the third, and the Royals loaded the bases against Chris Tillman later in the inning with a pair of singles and a walk before Gordon sent a broken-bat double down the line in right to push the lead to 4-0. Adam Jones singled in a run in the bottom of the frame to get Baltimore on the board, but Butler’s sacrifice fly in the fifth restored Kansas City’s four-run advantage.

James Shields surrendered a pair of singles leading off the bottom of the fifth and Cruz’s double off the wall brought home a run before Flaherty lined a two-out, two-run single to right to trim the deficit to 5-4. The Royals went to rookie left-hander Brandon Finnegan in the sixth and watched as a walk, a single, a botched pickoff and Alejandro De Aza’s infield pop dropping between the mound and second base combine to plate the tying run.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Kansas City, which led the majors in stolen bases, had a runner picked off first to end the fifth, and speedy OF Jarrod Dyson was thrown out on an attempted steal of second with none out in the seventh when his foot came off the bag. … Tillman was charged with five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, while “Big Game James” Shields allowed four runs and 10 hits in five frames to raise his ERA to 5.19 in nine career postseason starts. … Kansas City is the first team to play four extra-inning games in the same postseason since the 2004 New York Yankees.
