Cardinals 8, Nationals 0: Adam Wainwright pitched a two-hit shutout as visiting St. Louis rolled past Washington in the opener of a four-game set.

Matt Adams drove in three runs and Matt Holliday added a pair of RBIs for St. Louis, which pounded out 14 hits. Five players had two hits apiece, including Wainwright and Holliday.

The only hits for Washington were Ian Desmond's infield single in the second inning and Adam LaRoche's single with two outs in the ninth. In addition to committing four errors, the Nationals struck out eight times against Wainwright (3-1), who walked three batters in a 110-pitch effort.

The Nationals' night got off to a horrible start as shortstop Desmond committed an error to open the top of the first before Kolten Wong reached on an infield single and Holliday followed with a double to kick off the scoring. Adams followed with a groundout which plated Wong, and Yadier Molina's single against Taylor Jordan (0-2) made it 3-0 only five batters into the game.

Another error by Desmond helped set up a fourth-inning run for St. Louis, which extended its lead to 7-0 on consecutive run-scoring singles by Holliday and Adams in the sixth. Wong's RBI single in the seventh capped the scoring.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Desmond has seven errors in 16 games. Coming into this one, his five errors led the major leagues. … Jordan surrendered seven runs - five earned - over 5 1/3 innings. … Washington LF Bryce Harper returned to the lineup after missing a game with a quad injury and went 0-for-4.
