Padres 4, Giants 1: Rene Rivera drove in two runs and Ian Kennedy allowed one unearned run over seven innings as visiting San Diego ended San Francisco's hopes of securing the first National League wild-card spot.

Kennedy (13-13) yielded four hits and struck out six to win his third consecutive start and second in a row over San Francisco while Joaquin Benoit worked a perfect ninth for his 11th save. Yasmani Grandal and Seth Smith each drove in a run for San Diego, which has won nine of its last 12 games.

The Padres took an early lead on Grandal’s RBI single in the first off Ryan Vogelsong (8-13), who allowed four runs (three earned) over 5 1/3 innings. Brandon Belt went 2-for-3 and scored for the Giants, who will visit either St. Louis or Pittsburgh for next Wednesday’s NL wild-card game.

Belt singled to begin the second and later scored on Brandon Crawford’s sacrifice fly to tie the game before the Padres moved ahead with three runs in the sixth. Smith doubled in a run and Rivera followed with a two-run single off Vogelsong, who fell to 0-4 with a 5.53 ERA in his last five starts.

The Giants, who went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, had two on with one out in the fourth before Kennedy retired Andrew Susac and Crawford to end the inning. Kennedy reached the 200-inning mark for the third time in his career and threw 67 of his 95 pitches for strikes.
