Mariners 4, Rangers 2: Kendrys Morales singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth as visiting Seattle waited out the rain and clinched a series win over Texas.

Kyle Seager smacked a two-run homer among three hits and Logan Morrison added an RBI single for the Mariners, who have won five straight to increase their lead over the Detroit Tigers for the second American League wild card spot to 1 1/2 games. Danny Farquhar (2-1) picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief as Seattle handed the Rangers their eighth straight loss.

Neal Cotts (2-9) came on in the eighth for Texas and put two runners on with a walk and a single before Morales sent a first-pitch fastball into left field to plate the go-ahead run, and Morrison followed with an RBI single to cap the rally. Ryan Rua and Michael Choice each drove in a run for the Rangers in a game that was delayed 3:13 at the start due to rain.

Rua sent a liner into the corner in left for his first career double that scored Tomas Telis, and he moved up on a sacrifice before coming home on Choice’s sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 lead in the fourth. The Mariners got both those runs back on one swing in the sixth, when Seager came up with Robinson Cano on first and sent a 1-0 changeup into the stands in right for his 23rd home run.

Brad Miller went 4-for-4 for the Mariners, who stayed within two games of the Oakland Athletics in the top wild-card spot. Fernando Rodney worked a perfect ninth to notch his AL-best 43rd save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Mariners starter Chris Young, who had been ripped for a total of eight earned runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings over his last two outings, was charged with two unearned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six in five innings. … Texas starter Nick Martinez was reached for two runs and six hits while striking out four in six innings. … The Rangers officially shut down RHP Yu Darvish (elbow) for the rest of the season.
