Mariners 5, Rangers 0: James Paxton scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings and Robinson Cano belted a solo homer as host Seattle evened its three-game series with Texas.

Endy Chavez ripped a two-run double for the Mariners, who have won 15 of their last 20 overall and nine of 11 at Safeco Field to remain a half-game ahead of Detroit in the race for the second wild card in the American League. Dustin Ackley added an RBI single among his two hits and Austin Jackson tripled and scored a run.

Adrian Beltre collected two of the four hits for the cellar-dwelling Rangers, who have dropped eight of their last 12. Nick Martinez (3-10) was battered for five runs on six hits in five innings.

Paxton (4-1) rebounded after suffering his first career defeat in his last outing by striking out four to highlight his 118-pitch performance. The 25-year-old British Columbian was relieved by Danny Farquhar, who struck out a pair and did not allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings.

Cano opened the scoring in the first inning after depositing a 1-1 curveball from Martinez over the wall in left for his 12th homer - and first since Aug. 15. After Kyle Seager scored on a groundout in the second, Chavez gave Seattle a 4-0 lead with a double to center before Ackley tacked on another by plating Jackson with an RBI single.
