Mariners 6, Athletics 4: Felix Hernandez struck out 11 in seven-plus innings as Seattle defeated visiting Oakland in the opener of a three-game series.

Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 and scored twice and Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer as the Mariners ended the Athletics’ four-game winning streak. Robinson Cano and Brad Miller each had two hits with Miller hitting a sixth-inning homer.

Hernandez (3-0) took a shutout into the eighth inning and was charged with two runs and four hits and didn’t walk anyone. Fernando Rodney struck out two in the ninth for his third save.

Cano’s infield single in the first plated a run and two Oakland errors helped the Mariners increase the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Zunino hit his blast off Tommy Milone (0-1) in the sixth and Miller added his later in the inning against reliever Drew Pomeranz.

Hernandez was pulled after the first two batters reached the eighth. Jed Lowrie drew a bases-loaded walk off Danny Farquhar for Oakland’s first run and three more crossed on Brandon Moss’ single, a fielder’s choice by Yoenis Cespedes and a wild pitch by reliever Charlie Furbush.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Athletics RHP Jim Johnson struck out four in two perfect innings in his first appearance since being demoted as the team’s closer. … Hernandez has 30 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings over his first three starts. … Oakland OF Coco Crisp (wrist) fanned as a pinch hitter to end the game in his first at-bat since Sunday.
