Cardinals 6, Phillies 5 (12): Matt Carpenter provided the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as visiting St. Louis prevailed over Philadelphia.

The Cardinals wasted a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the 11th but bounced back in the following frame against rookie Ken Giles (2-1). Pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso led off with a walk and advanced on a sacrifice and an infield single before Carpenter hit a fly ball to deep left field.

Carpenter, Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras each had two hits for St. Louis, which moved within a half-game of first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central. Seth Maness (5-2) worked two innings of relief to earn the victory before Trevor Rosenthal took care of things in the 12th for his 38th save.

The Phillies trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth before Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley opened the frame with singles against Randy Choate and advanced on a double steal. Choate hit Ryan Howard before giving way to Pat Neshek, who promptly gave up Marlon Byrd's tying hit on an 0-2 pitch before recovering to get the final two hitters with the go-ahead run on third.

Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta hit a solo homer in the second inning to make it 1-0, and a pair of sixth-inning errors by Philadelphia helped St. Louis push its advantage to 5-2. Howard hit an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the Phillies a little closer before their tying rally in the eighth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals RHP Shelby Miller gave up three runs and five hits in six innings. His counterpart, RHP David Buchanan, yielded two runs and eight hits over five frames for the Phillies. ... Wong, who has two hits in each of the series' first two games, had not recorded back-to-back multi-hit games since July 18-19. ... Philadelphia CF Ben Revere and St. Louis 1B Matt Adams, both of whom are in contention for the National League batting title, combined to go 1-for-10.
