Rays 6, Yankees 1: Jake Odorizzi worked six solid innings and Nick Franklin recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored as host Tampa Bay topped New York.

Six days after the Yankees torched him for six runs, Odorizzi (11-12) allowed just one run and five hits in lowering his ERA to 3.98. Franklin's big game came in his first major-league appearance for the Rays since coming over in a trade with Seattle, while James Loney added three hits and Wil Myers plated two runs with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly as the Rays won their third straight.

Ichiro Suzuki delivered a second-inning RBI single to account for the only run for New York, which remained six games behind Kansas City for the second American League wild card. Michael Pineda (3-5) yielded two runs - one earned - and four hits over 5 1/3 innings before things really got interesting when reliever David Phelps threw at Kevin Kiermaier in the eighth, leading to a benches-clearing incident.

The Rays scored an unearned run in the fifth on an error by Pineda, who couldn't handle a toss from first baseman Brian McCann on a close play at the bag. Franklin doubled in the sixth and scored on Yunel Escobar's squeeze to make it 2-1.

Tampa Bay scored four more times in the seventh, beginning with RBI singles by Evan Longoria and Franklin. The Rays had the bases loaded later in the frame when Myers drilled a ball to deep center field and Jacoby Ellsbury made a stellar diving catch, although two runs came in on the play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rays had not won three straight games since Aug. 13-15. ... Yankees SS Derek Jeter, who had the day off Monday, went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice but remains mired in an 0-for-26 slump as part of a 5-for-45 performance this month. ... Jeter was hit by a pitch in the eighth by Steven Geltz, prompting plate umpire Rob Drake to warn both benches - which led to an argument from and the ejection of Yankees manager Joe Girardi. In the following frame, Phelps threw high and tight to Kiermaier, leading to both benches and bullpens emptying. Since both teams had been warned, Phelps and New York bench coach Tony Pena - the team's acting manager - were ejected by Drake.
