Yankees 8, Rays 5:
Brian McCann homered and drove in three as New York overcame a disastrous start from Chris Capuano and evened the series with visiting Tampa Bay.

Chris Young homered and doubled in a run, Mark Teixeira added an RBI triple and Chase Headley drove in a run and scored for the Yankees, who pulled within 4 1/2 games of Detroit for the second American League wild card. Capuano managed to record only one out while allowing four runs on as many hits but five relievers combined to allow one run in 8 1/3 innings, with Preston Claiborne (3-0) picking up the win.

Jake Odorizzi (10-12) was reached for six runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings as the Rays squandered a chance to clinch a series win. Wil Myers and Yunel Escobar each had two hits and an RBI while Evan Longoria hit his 20th home run in the ninth.

Myers doubled in a run, Escobar and Logan Forsythe added back-to-back RBI singles to left and Ryan Hanigan lifted a sacrifice fly to left to get Tampa Bay out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. New York got a run back in the bottom half on a towering solo shot by McCann that wrapped around the foul pole in right.

McCann’s single to center in the third brought in two more runs before Young’s first homer since joining the team went out to left in the fourth and knotted it up. Odorizzi hit McCann with a pitch in the fifth before Teixeira followed with a liner into the corner in right that Myers misplayed into a go-ahead triple, and Headley singled in Teixeira to make it 6-4.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees DH Carlos Beltran (elbow) was a late scratch and is day-to-day. … New York RHP Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday and a simulated game on Monday, and if all goes well the All-Star could return next weekend. … Rays LF Ben Zobrist singled to begin the first-inning rally and mark his 1,000th career hit.
