Yankees 7, Blue Jays 3: Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven solid innings to win his highly anticipated debut with New York as the Yankees spoiled Toronto's home opener.

Rookie Yangervis Solarte contributed three RBIs and Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and scored twice while Ichiro Suzuki had three of New York's 16 hits. Tanaka, who allowed a home run to the first batter he faced - former Yankee Melky Cabrera, struck out eight while allowing three runs (two earned) and six hits.

Jonathan Diaz drove in two runs and Edwin Encarnacion recorded two hits for the Blue Jays, who lost for the 16th time in the last 22 meetings with New York. Dustin McGowan (0-1) yielded four runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings - and five hits to the first six batters he faced - for Toronto.

Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira provided RBI singles to give New York a 2-0 lead in the first before Cabrera crushed Tanaka's third pitch over the wall in right-center. Diaz delivered a two-run single to put Toronto ahead 3-2 with one out in the second, but Tanaka got out of further trouble by striking out Cabrera and Colby Rasmus.

The Yankees took the lead for good in the third when Solarte drilled a two-run double into the right-center gap - one batter after an instant play challenge revealed Suzuki beat out a grounder to second after he was originally called out. New York extended the lead to 5-3 on Brian McCann's RBI single in the fourth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Teixeira left in the second inning with a strained right hamstring. ... The Yankees didn't arrive at their hotel until 6 a.m. ET on Friday after clearing customs and enduring a severely turbulent flight from Houston, prompting manager Joe Girardi to give SS Derek Jeter the night off. Rookie Dean Anna replaced Jeter and recorded his first major-league hit - a single in the ninth inning. ... Tanaka, who signed a seven-year, $155 million contract, was 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 2013 with Tohoku Rakuten of Japan's Pacific League and hasn't lost in 29 decisions since Aug. 19, 2012.
