Pirates 7, Marlins 2:
Edinson Volquez tossed seven scoreless innings and Gregory Polanco drove in four runs as Pittsburgh turned aside visiting Miami in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Jordy Mercer drove in a run among three hits and Russell Martin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Pirates, who pulled within 1 1/2 games of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central and reside a half game behind San Francisco in the race for the second wild card. Volquez (9-7) took a no-hitter into the fifth and ended up yielding one hit and striking out seven while snapping a three-start winless streak.

Brian Flynn (0-1) made his first start of the season in place of Jarred Cosart (oblique) and struggled for the Marlins, surrendering five runs on eight hits in four-plus innings. Dan Jennings, who came on to pitch the seventh inning for Miami, took a line drive off the left side of his head from Mercer and staggered to the ground before being attended to by both teams' trainers and getting taken off on a cart. Jennings, who was diagnosed with a concussion, was expected to remain in the hospital overnight for observation.

Flynn made it through the lineup once unscathed before struggling in the fourth inning, when Martin snapped a scoreless draw with an RBI single off third baseman Donovan Solano’s glove. Polanco came up later in the frame with the bases loaded and sent a single into left-center to make it a 3-0 advantage.

The Pirates grabbed two more runs in the fifth on Mercer’s RBI single to center and Gaby Sanchez’s RBI single. Polanco added a two-run double in the eighth to put it away and the Marlins finally got on the board on Giancarlo Stanton’s two-run blast with two outs in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Mercer’s liner came off the bat at 101 mph before hitting Jennings, who waved to the crowd on his way off the field. The line drive caromed off Jennings and was caught by SS Adeiny Hechavarria for an out. … Pirates LF Josh Harrison singled and scored, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. … Pittsburgh continues its homestand by hosting San Diego on Friday while the Marlins will head to Cincinnati to continue their road trip.
