Dodgers 5, Pirates 2: Justin Turner had two RBIs and scored two runs in a fill-in start at shortstop and Adrian Gonzalez reached base five times as visiting Los Angeles took the opener of a three-game set.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (11-5) allowed two runs and five hits with five strikeouts to improve to 7-2 on the road and 3-0 in his career against Pittsburgh. Gonzalez had an RBI single among three hits and two walks while both Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier drove in a run as the Dodgers produced their best scoring output in nine games.

Edinson Volquez (8-7), who tossed a complete game at St. Louis in his last start before the All-Star break, was reached for five runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. Russell Martin and Jordy Mercer had back-to-back RBI singles in a fourth-inning rally for the Pirates, who had won six straight at home.

Kemp doubled in a run in the third to start the scoring and Ethier followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. Turner, who was starting at shortstop for the first time since May 1 in place of the injured Hanley Ramirez, ripped a shot off third baseman Josh Harrison that went for a two-run double in the fourth and Gonzalez singled him in for a 5-0 advantage.

Ryu retired nine straight following Mercer's run-scoring hit and worked around a two-out single in the seventh before yielding to the bullpen. Brian Wilson and J.P. Howell worked the eighth and Kenley Jansen nailed down his 29th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ramirez and RF Yasiel Puig were sidelined after both were hit by pitches on the left hand over the weekend. X-rays were negative for both players. ...
