Rockies 3, Padres 2: Drew Stubbs hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth and visiting Colorado used a pair of dazzling defense plays in the bottom of the inning to snap San Diego's five-game winning streak.

Justin Morneau drove in a run while maintaining his lead in the National League batting race at .319 and DJ LeMahieu also recorded an RBI for the Rockies, who have won seven of their last eight games. Juan Nicasio (6-6) earned the victory with a scoreless seventh inning and LaTroy Hawkins worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his 23rd save of the season in his 998th career game as Colorado won for the second time in its last 14 road contests.

Rymer Liriano and Alexi Amarista knocked in runs for the Padres, whose major league-best record in one-run games fell to 32-20 and 9-2 in the last 11 such contests. Dale Thayer (4-4) took the loss after Stubbs' blast on the first pitch he threw bounced off the top of the right field wall - just past the glove of Liriano - and over for his 15th home run of the season as San Diego fell to 44-15 when scoring two or more runs at home.

Rockies left fielder Brandon Barnes preserved the lead when he robbed Rene Rivera of a possible home run with a leaping catch at the wall while second baseman LeMahieu ended the eighth by robbing Amarista of a potential game-tying single with a diving stab on his bullet one-hopper. The Padres made it 2-2 in the sixth on a leadoff single by Jedd Gyorko and three straight two-out hits by Tommy Medica, Liriano and Amarista.

Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the third when Rafael Ynoa doubled with one out and came home on Morneau's two-out single. The Rockies delivered three straight singles to open the fourth with LeMahieu's hit scoring Barnes before the inning was derailed when starter Jorge De La Rosa bunted into a double play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: De La Rosa yielded two runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out seven in six innings while San Diego's Robbie Erlin extended his unbeaten string to six starts after allowing two runs and six hits in four frames. ... Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison is second in the NL batting race at .317 with teammate Andrew McCutchen third at .313. ... The Padres (47-33) need a victory Wednesday in their final home game to set a record for most wins since Petco Park opened in 2004.
