Rockies 3, Padres 0: Drew Stubbs and Nolan Arenado belted solo homers while Tyler Matzek tossed a three-hitter as Colorado blanked visiting San Diego in the opener of their three-game series.

Matzek (5-9) issued one walk and struck out six while throwing 103 pitches en route to the first complete game of his career. Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu recorded two hits apiece for Colorado, which has won three of its last four games.

Stubbs put the Rockies on the board in the first with a one-out blast off Eric Stults (6-16), who allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings in losing his third consecutive start. Matzek allowed his first hit in the third as Rymer Liriano delivered a one-out single before Stults and Abraham Almonte struck out to end the inning.

LeMahieu singled to begin the fifth, moved to second on Matzek’s sacrifice and scored on Blackmon’s single up the middle. Arenado extended the Rockies’ lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth off Stults, who remained winless in four starts against Colorado this season.

Matzek, who was making his 15th career start, retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced following Almonte’s bunt single with one out in the sixth. Almonte added a leadoff double in the ninth for the Padres, who were shut out for the 17th time this season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Matzek has worked at least seven innings and collected wins in each of his last three starts. The complete-game shutout was the first by a Rockie since Jhoulys Chacin accomplished the feat on April 15, 2011 against the Chicago Cubs. … Padres RHP Joe Wieland will make his season debut Saturday against Colorado LHP Jorge De La Rosa. … San Diego has scored a total of eight runs over its last six games.
