Tigers 5, Yankees 2: J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to back eight strong innings from Rick Porcello as host Detroit snapped New York's five-game winning streak.

Porcello (15-8) allowed two runs on nine hits to join teammate Max Scherzer with an American League-best 15 wins as the Tigers reside 1 1/2 games behind first-place Kansas City in the AL Central. Torii Hunter added two hits and an RBI single, Nick Castellanos drove in a run and Joe Nathan notched his 28th save as Detroit remained one-half game in back of Seattle for the second wild card.

Jacoby Ellsbury belted a pair of solo homers among three hits for the Yankees, who dropped 3 1/2 games behind the Mariners. Brandon McCarthy (8-13) had his worst outing since he was acquired from Arizona, giving up five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

After Martinez singled to lead off the second, McCarthy hurt himself with a walk and hit batsman to load the bases before walking Rajai Davis to force in the first run. Miguel Cabrera doubled and scored on Martinez's single in the third but New York got that run back on Ellsbury's first blast in the fifth.

Victor Martinez singled in front of a double by J.D. Martinez in the sixth before Castellanos plated one run with a single and a second scored on a double-play grounder for a 4-1 edge. Hunter singled home Davis in the seventh to extend the lead but Ellsbury took Porcello into the seats in right again in the eighth to make it 5-2.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ellsbury boosted his career numbers to 11-for-17 with four homers - all solo shots - off Porcello. ... Tigers RHP Anibal Sanchez, sidelined since Aug. 9 with a pectoral strain, had a setback in his rehab and underwent an ultrasound Tuesday that revealed torn scar tissue in the pectoral area. ... Yankees LF Ichiro Suzuki collected the 2,295 single of his career in the third inning to move past Hank Aaron into sole possession of 12th place on the all-time list.
