Rays 1, Tigers 0: Alex Cobb allowed only two hits over seven dominant innings to outduel former teammate David Price as host Tampa Bay avoided a sweep in the finale of a three-game series.

Brandon Guyer tripled home an unearned run in the first inning for the Rays, who moved within seven games of the Tigers for the American League’s second wild card. Cobb (9-6) won his seventh straight decision after striking out six and walking two while Jake McGee worked around a one-out single in the ninth for his 14th save.

Price (12-9), traded from Tampa Bay to Detroit on July 31, was just as dazzling while yielding only one hit and striking out nine in eight innings. Eugenio Suarez collected two hits for the Tigers, who lead the race for the AL’s second wild card by one-half game over Seattle and trail first-place Kansas City by 1 ½ games in the AL Central.

Ben Zobrist reached on Suarez’s throwing error at shortstop in the first inning and scored on Guyer’s triple to the right-center field gap. Detroit's Torii Hunter led off the seventh with a double to right field, moved up on a groundout and Victor Martinez was intentionally walked before Cobb retired the final two batters.

Suarez doubled with one out in the eighth, but right fielder Kevin Kiermaier made a diving catch on Rajai Davis and Brad Boxberger struck out Ian Kinsler to end the inning. Price retired the last 23 batters he faced after Guyer’s triple and received a nifty leaping catch from Hunter at the right-field wall in the fifth inning.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cobb allowed two or fewer runs for the eighth consecutive start, passing Victor Zambrano and Matt Moore (twice) for the club record. … The Rays improved to 52-28 versus former Cy Young Award winners since the start of the 2008 season. … Tampa Bay begins a three-game series at Toronto while the Tigers visit Minnesota to start a four-game set on Friday.
