Mariners 8, Tigers 1: Kyle Seager had two hits and three RBIs to back six scoreless innings from Chris Young as visiting Seattle climbed over Detroit for the second wild card in the American League.

Young (12-6) scattered four hits to win his third straight start and improve to 4-0 in his last six as the Mariners moved one-half game ahead of the Tigers by claiming the rubber match of the three-game series. Chris Denorfia had an RBI triple among three hits and Robinson Cano added two hits and scored three times as Seattle won for the sixth time in seven games.

Robbie Ray (1-3) labored through five innings, yielding four runs - three earned - on seven hits as Detroit dropped 1 1/2 games behind first-place Kansas City in the AL Central. Victor Martinez had two hits and an RBI and Rajai Davis stole three bases before exiting with a bruised thumb for the Tigers, who have not won a series since sweeping Colorado from Aug. 1-3.

Ray hurt himself with a walk and a balk in the first inning before Kendrys Morales singled home a run and Seager added a sacrifice fly. The Mariners extended the lead on Ray's wild pitch in the third and Denorfia's run-scoring triple in the fifth - both coming with two outs - for a 4-0 edge.

Seattle broke it open in the seventh against reliever Jim Johnson when Chris Taylor doubled and scored on Dustin Ackley's grounder before left fielder Davis dropped Morales' pop fly to bring home another run. Seager greeted reliever Blaine Hardy with a single up the middle before Martinez got the Tigers on the board with an RBI double in the eighth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Young matched his career-high win total set in 2005 with Texas in his first full season in the majors. ... Johnson, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo to make his Detroit debut after he was released by Oakland on Aug. 1, was charged with three runs (one earned) on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. ... RHP Justin Verlander, who missed his scheduled start Sunday due to shoulder inflammation, will rest until Tuesday for Detroit, which opens a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Seattle continues its nine-game road trip in Philadelphia on Monday night.
