Mariners 7, Tigers 2:
James Paxton remained undefeated and Robinson Cano homered as visiting Seattle knocked off Detroit for its fifth straight win.

Logan Morrison and Cano each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs while Kyle Seager and Chris Taylor notched two hits and an RBI apiece for the Mariners, who climbed within 6 1/2 games of first-place Oakland in the American League West and moved one-half game in front of Detroit for the second wild-card spot. Paxton (3-0) moved to 6-0 in his major-league career by allowing one run on five hits in six innings.

Rick Porcello (13-8) was reached for six runs - five earned - on 10 hits over six frames as the Tigers fell for the seventh time in 10 games. Miguel Cabrera doubled twice, Ian Kinsler recorded an RBI and Victor Martinez singled in a run for Detroit, which fell 1 1/2 games behind Kansas City for first in the AL Central.

Seattle took control with a three-run second inning as Morrison and Endy Chavez each recorded an RBI single before former Tiger Austin Jackson’s double-play groundout pushed Morrison across to cap the rally. Cano led off the third and took a first-pitch curveball out to right for his 11th home run and a 4-0 lead.

Rajai Davis tripled with one out in the third and scored on Kinsler’s groundout to provide the lone blemish on Paxton’s line. Morrison doubled to begin the fourth and scored on Taylor’s single before the Mariners made it 6-1 on Seager’s RBI base hit in the fifth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Jackson, who went from the Tigers to Seattle in a three-team trade at the July 31 deadline, was playing his first game back in Detroit and received a standing ovation before his first at-bat. He went 0-for-5 and was caught stealing in the contest. … Tigers OF Andy Dirks (hamstring) is expected to restart his rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. … Paxton has yet to surrender more than three earned runs in nine career starts.
