Dodgers 3, Tigers 2 (10): Chone Figgins scored from first base on Carl Crawford’s one-out double in the 10th inning and Los Angeles edged visiting Detroit in the opener of the two-game set.

J.P. Howell (1-0) worked a perfect 10th inning after the Tigers tied the game in the ninth when Ian Kinsler hit a leadoff double off Kenley Jansen and scored on Victor Martinez’s two-out single. The late-inning drama followed a pitchers’ duel between the Dodgers’ Dan Haren and Detroit’s Max Scherzer, who yielded two runs over seven innings while striking out eight.

Haren allowed one run on three hits over six innings for the Dodgers, who won their second straight when Figgins pinch hit for Howell and drew a leadoff walk from Joba Chamberlain (0-1). Phil Coke came in and retired Dee Gordon before Figgins scored when Crawford lined a 2-0 pitch past left fielder Rajai Davis.

Austin Jackson tied the game with a solo homer in the second for the Tigers, who have lost two in a row since opening the season with four consecutive wins. The Dodgers, who won despite going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when Matt Kemp drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on pinch-hitter Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly.

Carl Crawford had three hits for Los Angeles, which struck out 11 times against four Detroit pitchers. The Tigers had just three base runners after Jackson’s second-inning homer until the ninth, when Kinsler sparked the rally by stretching a single into a double.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Dodgers placed C A.J. Ellis (knee) on the disabled list and recalled C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque.
