Pirates 2, Reds 1: Josh Harrison delivered a tying RBI triple in the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on Jose Tabata's single as host Pittsburgh posted its third straight victory.

Harrison collected three hits and Tabata finished with two for the Pirates, who climbed within three games of first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central and 1 1/2 of St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. Tony Watson (10-1) notched the win in relief of Edinson Volquez, who yielded one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six in 7 2/3 innings, and Mark Melancon worked a perfect ninth for his 25th save.

Devin Mesoraco drove in the lone run and notched two of the four hits by the Reds, who fell seven games behind the Cardinals. Jonathan Broxton (4-2) allowed two runs on three hits in one frame after Mike Leake scattered six hits over seven scoreless innings.

Neither team had a runner advance past first base until the top of the sixth, when Billy Hamilton drew a one-out walk, stole second and went to third on Pirates catcher Russell Martin's throwing error. But Volquez fanned Todd Frazier and Brandon Phillips lined out to end the inning. Harrison doubled and went to third on Tabata's two-out infield single in the bottom half before Andrew McCutchen fouled out.

Volquez kept his former team hitless until Mesoraco led off the seventh with a single, and Cincinnati's catcher snapped the scoreless tie an inning later, punching a base hit into left-center field off Watson to plate Hamilton, who reached on a one-out single and stole second before racing home. Broxton was unable to preserve the lead, however, as pinch-hitter Andrew Lambo hit a one-out single and scored on the triple by Harrison, who came home on Tabata's base hit.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hamilton stole two bases to raise his season total to 53, one shy of the franchise rookie record set in 1909 by Bob Bescher. ... Pittsburgh has won six of its last eight contests overall but only five of its 14 meetings with Cincinnati this season. ... Volquez has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each contest during his seven-start unbeaten streak.
