Marlins 2, Reds 1: Nathan Eovaldi pitched eight scoreless innings and Giancarlo Stanton belted his National League-leading 28th homer as visiting Miami edged Cincinnati in the opener of their three-game series.

Casey McGehee and Marcell Ozuna each collected two hits while Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in a run for the Marlins, who climbed within 6 1/2 games of first-place Washington in the NL East. Eovaldi (6-6) scattered five hits and walked just one while striking out six to snap his seven-game winless streak while Steve Cishek stranded the tying run at third base for his 28th save.

Todd Frazier recorded three hits and Devin Mesoraco plated the lone run as the Reds dropped five games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee. Mike Leake (9-10) struck out seven while yielding two runs on five hits and four walks over seven innings in losing for the first time in four career starts against Miami.

The Marlins left five on base in the first three innings and went down in order in the next two before McGehee’s one-out double set the table for the game’s first run in the sixth. Garrett Jones walked and Ozuna was hit by a pitch before Saltalamacchia lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.

Stanton made a sliding catch in right field with two on and two out to end the sixth before launching a breaking ball from Leake into the second deck in the seventh for a 2-0 lead. Frazier doubled to start the ninth and scored on a two-base hit by Mesoraco, but Cishek struck out Zack Cozart with two on to end it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami has not surrendered a home run in 11 consecutive games, one away from the franchise record in 2013. … Cincinnati C-1B Brayan Pena left the game with a tight left hamstring in the third inning after extending his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the second. … The Marlins placed LHP Dan Jennings on the seven-day concussion list, optioned OF-INF Enrique Hernandez and LHP Brian Flynn to Triple-A New Orleans while recalling INF Ed Lucas, RHP Anthony DeSclafani and LHP Edgar Olmos. Miami also acquired minor-league RHPs Jose Arias and Tyler Bremer from the Chicago Cubs for RHP Jacob Turner.
