Reds 1, Nationals 0: Johnny Cueto struck out nine over seven dominant innings as Cincinnati edged visiting Washington to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Brayan Pena knocked in the only run while Chris Heisey doubled and scored for the Reds, who have recorded 14 runs in eight games since the All-Star break. Cueto (11-6) allowed four hits and three walks before Aroldis Chapman notched his 22nd save by getting the final four outs.

Wilson Ramos collected a pair of hits for the Nationals, who have dropped three of five against Cincinnati this season with one game to go on Sunday. Washington starter Gio Gonzalez (6-6) yielded one run on four hits over seven innings while striking out eight to suffer the loss.

Gonzalez did not give up a hit until Ramon Santiago’s double with one out in the fourth inning, but retired the next two batters. The Reds broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, however, as Heisey hit a ground-rule double, stole third and trotted home on Pena’s single to left.

Jonathan Broxton put two runners on with two outs in the eighth before Chapman retired Adam LaRoche on a grounder to shortstop. Pena threw out Ian Desmond trying to steal after a leadoff walk in the ninth and Chapman fanned the final two batters to extend his streak to 43 appearances with at least one strikeout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cueto, who gave up a season-high eight runs in a loss at Washington on May 20, won for the sixth time in seven decisions. … Washington CF Denard Span went 1-for-4 and has nine hits in his last three games. … Reds RF Jay Bruce made an outstanding running catch on Ramos in the second before doubling up Bryce Harper (two walks) at first base.
