Padres 8, Reds 2:
Carlos Quentin homered and drove in three runs and Seth Smith belted a solo shot among his three hits to power host San Diego to its third straight victory.

Yasmani Grandal and Alexi Amarista each had two hits and scored while Chase Headley and Cameron Maybin added RBI singles for the Padres, who erupted for 16 hits after batting .171 in June - the worst average for a calendar month in major-league history. Ian Kennedy (6-9) halted a personal three-game losing streak by permitting one run over six innings and helping himself with a run-scoring single.

Mike Leake (6-7) was thwarted in his bid to win a fourth consecutive start, getting knocked around for three runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings to remain winless in five starts against his hometown team. Devin Mesoraco homered and Todd Frazier had an RBI single for Cincinnati, which has dropped two in a row following a five-game winning streak.

Smith, who scored three times and finished a triple shy of the cycle, homered to lead off the first before San Diego put together three straight two-out singles in the second, the last by Kennedy plating the second run. After Frazier singled home a run in the fifth, the Padres answered in the bottom of the inning on Smith's leadoff double and Headley's single.

Quentin ended a 10-game homerless drought with a two-run shot off reliever Logan Ondrusek in a four-run seventh that also featured an RBI single by Maybin. Mesoraco homered in the ninth and the Reds had the bases loaded, but the game ended when Padres manager successfully challenged that Frazier was safe at second base.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith entered the contest mired in an 0-for-17 slump while Quentin was 1-for-22 in his previous 10 contests. ... Mesoraco went deep for the sixth time in 12 games to give him 14 on the season. ... Padres SS Everth Cabrera was not in the lineup due to a left hamstring strain and a decision on whether to place him on the disabled list will be made later in the week.
