Reds 4, Cardinals 0: Devin Mesoraco clubbed a two-run homer and Mike Leake threw eight shutout innings as visiting Cincinnati salvaged a victory in the finale of the three-game series.
Billy Hamilton broke out of a 2-for-22 start to the season by delivering three hits, scoring two runs and swiping two bases and Mesoraco, Brandon Phillips and Chris Heisey added two hits apiece for the Reds. Leake (1-1) allowed four hits and walked one batter while throwing 100 pitches.
St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (0-2) threw six innings, surrendering three runs and seven hits while lowering his ERA to 6.35. Nobody managed more than one hit for the Cardinals, whose team batting average dipped to .215.
Mesoraco, who came off the disabled list Monday after suffering an oblique injury in the middle of spring training, slammed his two-run homer with two outs in the fourth to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. Jay Bruce added a sacrifice fly to very shallow right field that scored the speedy Hamilton in the fifth inning to make it 3-0.
Leake, the first starting pitcher since Jim Abbott in 1989 to go directly from the draft to the majors, allowed leadoff singles in the fourth and fifth innings but both were erased by double plays. He walked the leadoff batter again in the eighth but was aided by his third groundball double play, and the second hit by Jon Jay.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mesoraco was the 15th overall pick out of high school in 2007, just the third catcher ever drafted by the Reds in the first round. … Cincinnati catchers combined to go 7-for-12 in the three-game series. … Cardinals 1B Matt Adams is the only regular for St. Louis hitting better than .286.
