Astros 5, Indians 1: Jon Singleton highlighted a ninth-inning surge with a three-run homer as visiting Houston rallied to take the opener of the three-game series.

Marwin Gonzalez also went deep for the Astros, who improved to 5-3 on their 10-game road trip. Tony Sipp (4-2) notched the win after tossing a scoreless eighth and Chad Qualls worked the ninth to seal the victory in a non-save situation.

Zach Walters produced Cleveland's lone run with a homer as the Indians fell seven games behind first-place Kansas City in the American League Central and 4 1/2 in back of Detroit for the second wild-card spot. Cody Allen (4-3) took the loss after yielding four unearned runs, one hit and two walks in one frame.

Each team recorded just one hit over the first four innings before Gonzalez led off the fifth by depositing an 0-1 pitch from Carlos Carrasco over the right-field wall for his sixth blast of the season to give Houston the lead. Cleveland answered quickly as Walters belted Brad Peacock's 1-1 offering out to right with two outs in the bottom half for his fifth shot in 10 games since being acquired from Washington.

After the Indians wasted an opportunity to take the lead in the eighth inning, the Astros took advantage of theirs in the ninth as, with runners on the corners, Dexter Fowler stole second and pinch-runner Gregorio Petit scored on Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez's throwing error for a 2-1 edge. Singleton added insurance with a three-run homer later in the frame.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Peacock allowed one run and two hits with four strikeouts in five innings before leaving with discomfort in his forearm. Carrasco yielded a run and two hits while fanning eight in six frames. ... Cleveland ran itself out of a chance to snap the tie in the eighth as Mike Aviles was caught straying off second base with none out and Tyler Holt was thrown out attempting to swipe third, all during Perez's at-bat. ... Fowler went 0-for-4, ending his modest six-game hitting streak.
