Yankees 5, Indians 4 (14): Jacoby Ellsbury slugged a homer with two outs in the top of the 14th inning to lift New York past visiting Cleveland.

Ellsbury, who went 3-for-7, drilled an 0-2 pitch from Vinnie Pestano (0-1) well over the wall in right as the Yankees won for the fifth time in seven games. Mark Teixeira homered twice and had three RBIs for New York.

Chase Whitley (4-2) tossed two shutout innings of relief and David Robertson retired Michael Brantley on a fly to left with a runner on second to end the 14th and record his 22nd save. Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-7 for the Indians, who had the bases loaded and one out in the 10th but came up empty when Shawn Kelley struck out Nick Swisher and retired David Murphy on a grounder.

Swisher had a two-run single as Cleveland scored three runs in the first off Brandon McCarthy, who allowed four runs (one earned) and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings in his New York debut after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Teixeira led off the fourth with his first homer against Josh Tomlin, who gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Brian McCann hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to pull the Yankees within one before Teixeira hit a two-run blast later in the inning for his 37th career multi-homer game to give New York a 4-3 lead. Cabrera doubled with one out in the sixth and scored on Carlos Santana’s two-out single as the Indians knotted the score.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees placed RHP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled OF Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. … Cleveland plans to recall RHP Zach McAllister from Triple-A Columbus to start Saturday’s game in place of RHP Justin Masterson (knee), who was placed on the disabled list Tuesday. … New York OF Brett Gardner (abdominal strain) sat out and DH Carlos Beltran’s expected return from knee soreness didn’t occur after he suffered a broken nose when he was struck in the face with a batted ball during an indoor batting-practice session.
