Cubs 1, Reds 0: Anthony Rizzo led off the ninth inning with a home run to lift host Chicago in the opener of a three-game series.

Rizzo recorded two of Chicago's six hits, and his 31st homer provided all the offense. Hector Rondon (4-4) worked around a walk in the ninth for the win as four Cubs pitchers combined for a three-hitter.

Todd Frazier, Ramon Santiago and Yorman Rodriguez each singled for the Reds. Pedro Villareal (0-1) served up a 1-0 fastball that Rizzo drove to center field for the game-winner.

Cubs left-hander Travis Wood held his former team to three hits and three walks over six innings, while Reds right-hander Alfredo Simon gave up five hits and a walk over seven frames. The Cubs left the bases loaded in the first but didn't advance another runner past first base before Rizzo's walk-off blast.

The Reds had runners at second and third with one out in the third, but Wood struck out Billy Hamilton and got Kristopher Negron to fly out to right to end the threat. Arismendy Alcantara made a running catch on the warning track in right-center to end the eighth, robbing Negron of an extra-base hit and saving a run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cubs RF Jorge Soler singled in the first and has hit safely in 12 of his first 13 major-league games. … Rizzo (back) returned to the lineup for the first time since Aug. 26. … The Cubs matched last season's win total with their 66th victory.
